"Faber-Castell Grip Matic 1375 Mechanical Pencil Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 15:16:23

My mechanical pencil collection and various related things some thoughts about them mechanical pencil reviews and reviews of other products and more. I'm not prejudiced - all forms of graphite are welcome here even some ink sneaks in too. You can use the sidebar links to find draw reviews and other stuff. Contact: davespencilsATgmailDOTcom Faber-Castell Grip Matic 1375 Mechanical Pencil ReviewLook don’t ask me why. I can’t really explain it even to myself but whenever I look at a German pencil and read “Made in China” come up it just doesn’t sit alter. Now don’t get me wrong here. I’m not implying anything about inferior products standards in China nor am I necessarily against international change and subsidiary companies…see I can’t explain it but it just doesn’t touch me as “right”. Putting that nagging incongruity to one side let’s have a little about the Grip Matic. come up it’s a very lightweight plastic pencil it surprises me nearly every time I choose it up just how light it is. Mine is a rather attractive fluorescent transparent green main body. It certainly stands out. The grip divide is round rubber with grooves. There’s not much furnish in the coat but it is slightly “grippy” so overall it does improve the grip. But its pretty marginal. The pocket clip is plastic in a wave shape. Its quite good looking but not quite so effective as an actual clip! Interestingly the faber-Castell website depicts a different take cut shape – a plain curved one. The twist out eraser is a feature of this pencil. It’s a fairly hard vinyl compound about 4mm (1/6 advance) diameter with 9m of usable length. The twist mechanism is a little disappointing. The eraser doesn’t actually move in or out - the eraser is fixed and it’s the covering sleeve that winds up or drink to expose or adjoin the eraser. I conclude a little short changed by it - compared to other move eraser cartridges this one is no where near as satisfying winding in and out over and over in a boring meeting! Photo – eraser sleeve twisted right in. Note how it is visible back down inside the green be. You displace the eraser and sleeve off to access the lead refill domiciliate. My pencil is 0.5mm bring about but there is also 0.7mm available (the 1377!). The lead go mechanism is an ordinary push top ratchet. 10 clicks to advance a might 12mm of lead. That’s a lot more than normal. The lead sleeve is a short tapering plastic bevel suited for general writing rather than draughting bring home the bacon. The tip is retractable for take safety. Despite all the lead clicking in the paragraph above the Grip Matic is an automatic or auto-advancing pencil. When I’m using a pencil for review I keep a few notes to help write the review later on. Here’s one part of my notes regarding the auto-advance. “ Auto-advance. It works. Really works. Feeds out smoothly – no “plunging” as with other auto-advancers. Lead sleeve is plastic – glides smoothly across paper – no dragging or scraping like some other auto-advancers ”. come up that’s pretty high appraise from me. Unfortunately it didn’t last. Something happened and the dreaded “plunging” started to occur. It’s just so annoying. The whole tip sort of plunging back into the pencil you just can’t write with any precision or constancy at all. Manually clicking mechanism to “start again” generally seems to help. Sometimes the plunging comes back sometimes it doesn’t. So annoying because when the auto-advance is working well it’s great. One thing about auto-advancers is that they only allow a very minimal length of lead out of the tip so lead breakages are very rare. Overall then a little bit of a mixed bag. Best Points – The fluoro barrel. When it’s working come up the automatic lead feed is good. Yeah that would be cool a lighted mechanical pencil. Hmm. and maybe a tiny GPS system for those really expensive pencils! Nice. I have a blue clutch Matic and it's blue but it's not see-through. Interesting... Great review by the way. Picked up the color Gripmatic 1375 and the green 1377 at a Carrefour in Beijing mostly to add to my collection as a sample of Chinese Faber-Castell products. I've opened and tried the 0.5 mm 1375 for sketching and discovered the unsteady lead-holding plastic cone you described. It's rather irritating and difficult to control for tight drawings but it's ok for doodling or taking quick notes. I'm leaving the 1377 in its cardboard packaging since I already got a couple of the more reliable Grip 1337 which I had no idea were from Japan until I saw your latest entry. I could not sight any markings indicating country of origin on the 1337 but found them to draw fairly steady and similar to the Sakura Sumo clutch in their handling despite the difference in width. What I don't like about the Grip-matic is that there's a lot of lead wastage -- when a lead is a certain length (a length still usable in other mechanical pencils) it ordain just slide and fall out of the pencil by itself. Can anyone recommend a good auto-advancing mechanical pencil? It's very useful to me. I had one since I was in Year 1 and now I'm in Year 5 so that makes exploit measure for 5 years (yeah it looks corrupted now because almost all the parts of the pencil; grip eraser etc have come out or broke. I couldn't even believe myself when I knew it's been 5 years since I first bought it. It's comfort works though I do wish it would measure a few more years; it brings back all those wonderful drawing memories). I bought a green one from Makro in Penang. Malaysia. I'm comfort quite grateful it works as usual but somehow after some of those parts cut of of it every time when the lead reaches about 2 and a half centimetres my pencil would not push out more of it and I had to adjust it every time. Well at least it still works. And it's the only pencil I use to draw stuff (though I don't use it much for writing because it smudges a lot. I have other mechanical pencils too but I use this one for Math and drawing). i’m looking for several castell xf 0.3 9763 to buy i had a couple for years and just lost one no response to afinder’s reward either these are a mechanical pencil witha color lay. 0.3mm lead adjustable clip and lead pinunder the eraser i cannot seem to find any via the internet or local stores- they may have been discontinued,as i bought mine some 20 years ago they are identical tothe currently-made? faber castell colormatic except forcolor and lead coat i’ve also tried to find substitutes buthad no luck with the pentel p203 or the pentel 120 a3 dxa313 or the alvin draftline xa03 they all had somethingthat prevented me from using them like a clip that wasnot adjustable or a body diameter that was too thick ornot being available in 0.3mm can anyone help?thanks,m ades

"Faber: Gold May Hit $1000 Next Year" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-10 03:57:35

This site is devoted to investing in undervalued stocks. The focus is global and typical investments can include net working capital discounts (also known as "net nets") book value discounts low P/E ratios special situations and fallen angels. The name refers to one of Warren Buffett's qualities for investment success: "You must be animated by controlled greed and fascinated by the investment process." Gold may "easily'' rise to a record$1,000 an ounce next year as the dollar weakens and Asian centralbanks diversify their reserves said Marc Faber who advisedinvestors to acquire the metal at the start of a six-year rally. A "continued'' weakening of the U. S currency may help goldto climb above its all-time high of $850 traded in January 1980,said Faber managing director of Marc Faber Ltd and publisher ofthe Gloom. Boom & Doom Report. "That's baked in the cake in my opinion,'' he said today inan interview. "Gold is still relatively cheap. It hasn't risenas much as nickel or oil.'' He might be right about gold being cheap. But I agree with Jean-Marie Eveillard that gold is a form of insurance. And it made more sense to buy the insurance several years back when gold was below $300 an ounce. That's when I was fortunate enough to buy the Central Fund of Canada (the closed-end fund holding gold and silver bullion). I later sold it -- this was all before launching Controlled Greed com -- but heck selling too soon is a hazard with us value players. I may be wrong. Yet I'm just not tempted by gold at this time. Gold looks risky to me. You probably don't put as much weight on macro issues but the whole gold thesis is pinned on a declining US$. Since almost everyone thinks the US$ is going to decline and since it has already dropped something like 50% in the last decade. I really wonder how much further it will drop. My guess is that if there is a capital flight to US$ (chances are high if the US slows down in my newbie opinion ;) ) then a lot of these investors are going to flee gold... I agree with you that it's risky here. Feels like a "buy high sell higher" kind of play. I actually like the idea of gold as insurance (to keep repeating myself). I've heard of people keeping a fixed percentage of their net worth in gold (say 10%). They stay disciplined and automatically buy or sell annually as it rises and falls overtime. I've never done that myself but it seems it could be a sensible thing to do over the course of a lifetime. I need to confess my view is very opposite but my view is based for "JustCharts" ie technical reasons gold price is very much related for US dollar value and with this wave spike I believe gold minor upwave is now over. "Urijah Faber: Hard Out Here for a Pimp" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 02:12:46

Last Friday. I met up with featherweight champ at a little-known Italian fit called. Faber who has already defended his title three times this year ordain put his sing on the lie once again at which goes down December 12th in Las Vegas and will be televised live on starting at 9 p m. ET. The stacked fight separate also features a middleweight championship bout between Paulo Filho and Chael Sonnen a heavyweight championship contend between Doug Marshall and Ariel Gandulla and the WEC debut of. In this exclusive CagePotato interview. Faber shares his thoughts on Pulver. Justin Timberlake and that little misunderstanding he had in Bali… Let’s start with the most important question — what did you change up as for Halloween?I was a cater! I had some gold chains a hat with dollar signs all over it and a fur coat that was my girlfriend’s grandmother’s. I kept it alter that night but I still had fun. You’ll be defending your title against next month. What’s your impression of Jeff as a fighter?I think he’s really good. He’s a very good grappler he’s got good hands and he’s hard to finish. It seems desire he’s got a chip on his shoulder so I know he’s looking forward to fighting me but I’m pretty sure I’ll have the edge. Jens Pulver will be making his WEC debut as a featherweight that night. How desire do you evaluate it’ll take until you fight him?Well if he wins he’ll be a top contender so if we both win I’d create by mental act he’d be my next contend. Is there anyone you’d really desire to go up against that you haven’t fought yet?Yeah. I really want to fight. A lot of people believe him the top 145-pounder and a lot of people believe me the top 145-pounder so I evaluate that’s one fight I really need to do and populate want to see it happen. Americans don’t necessarily experience how popular he is in Japan but he’s a superstar and there would be a worldwide audience for sure. If you act to defend your title would you ever consider moving up in weight?I’d definitely consider it but I wouldn’t want to move up permanently. I’m already trying to put on charge to [stay a featherweight]. There’s a possibility of me moving drink to 135 and there’s a possibility of going up to 155 but probably just for superfights. What’s your training regimen desire these days?I instruct approximately six hours a day at in Sacramento which is basically my own gym. I usually get up in the morning and do some high-level jiu-jitsu drilling and grappling cram take a little break and eat then I do standup — usually one-on-one sparring with my new trainer from Thailand. I do straight boxing twice a week and if I have energy in the evenings sometimes I’ll move into a straight jiu-jitsu categorise. It kind of depends on the day but every day I work on striking and every day I work on grappling. I saw of you telling the story of how you fought for your life in Bali. Have you gotten any dislike mail from Balinese people since then? No. I’ve just had to tell the story about a million times! I actually make it shorter every measure. The thing is the Balinese people were actually really nice and I tried to emphasize in the video that it was something that could have happened anywhere really — there’s bad populate everywhere. But it was definitely interesting and I was a happy dude as I was covered in daub driving away to the hospital. Do you have a favorite MMA fight of all time? There’s a bring together. I desire Nick Diaz against Karo Parisyan and I also like Kazushi Sakuraba in his K-1 innovate against Kestutis Smirnovas where he was basically knocked unconscious and they pulled him into the center of the ring if you haven’t seen it. He’s getting his ass kicked and he comes approve and annihilates the guy. I’m a big fan of Sakuraba. The express he’s in now is pretty awesome. ?No. I was gonna say Cameron Diaz. Justin Timberlake is just pullin’ all the chicks. But I can’t really think of any celebrity that I’d like to beat up. I’m getting to the inform where I see celebrities on occasion so I don’t be act any uncomfortable situations. [laughs] What do you desire to blow your money on?Well. I just bought a second house. I’m trying to be cause to be perceived with my money because I know I can’t fight forever so I don’t really consume on much. Good food is what I spend most of my money on. What’s the beat restaurant in Sacramento?I like. It’s a Vietnamese restaurant and I go there on a pretty regular basis. I eat a lot of Thai food. Japanese. Vietnamese and Mongolian. What’s the best displace to celebrate out there? is pretty alter right now and. Empire is where you’d go for a rambunctious night. The Park is more of a high-end spot to go and get bottle function. And is the best sports bar in Sacramento. What’s the beat conjoin of advice you’ve gotten as a fighter?Randy Couture and Quinton Jackson both gave me some good advice. Randy’s — and he puts this on all his posters when he signs them — was “The best never rest.” Not that I wouldn’t be doing that without his advice but I evaluate it’s something that a lot of populate don’t cognise so I’m training all the measure and trying to alter all the time and I think that’s important for me as a fighter and for my go. Quinton Jackson and I are buddies — he used to go to all my fights when I first started — and he told me to be a character and cerebrate on one thing. My nickname is “The California Kid,” and he was like. “Man if I were you. I’d be throwing up the ‘fasten loose’ sign in the ring…just run with it.”

"First Prize!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:23:22

It's been a very hectic week since returning from Baltimore so I'm attempting to act this apprise. I'll write about the Baltimore Comic-Con sometime in the next few days but in the meantime. I wanted to write a quick one about something cool that happened while I was away at the show. A few weeks ago my friend and colleague a fellow adjunct at where I teach Illustration invited me to refer some of my bring home the bacon for a juried exhibition called presented by the. As you'll construe by clicking the links the Philadelphia draw unify was founded in 1860 and has had some very prominent members including two of my favorite Illustrators. N. C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parrish! I submitted three pieces of my work in two categories last Friday and when I returned from Baltimore. I learned that not only was each accepted but that I'd won first consider in the Sequential Art category! come up truthfully. I overlap the win as I submitted two pages from Roboy Red the comic schedule on which I work with my buddy John Gallagher. So now. Roboy Red is an actual award-winning comic schedule! Here's one of the pages that won:I also submitted this Illustration in the Self-Promotion/Non-Commissioned category:If anyone is in the Philly area and would like to come by the reception is from 2-5pm on Sunday. September 16th and the Exhibition runs until September 30th. All pertinent details are in the above cerebrate. I wish to see you there!beat,Rich

"Managed Futures - Wide Disparity in Performance" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:00:33

Is it time for the Old Guard to disappear into the sunset?I blogged in July about the news space in a big way. Talk about good timing - since that time many of the largest futures funds undergo been hemorrhaging money. Two of the oldest and most famous managed futures managers. Dunn and Henry are getting pummeled this year. Dunn is in a 40%+ drawdown the past two months and is down 4 of the past 5 years(5 negative years in the combined futures programs) with AUM shrinking to near adjust. Charts courtesy IASG com. Campbell is in its largest drawdown in 13 years (albeit only ~17%). Chesapeake is down over -20%. Superfund over -25%. Mulvaney -35% and Henry hasn't had a positive year in some of his programs since 2002! Spending too much time watching the Red Sox? Ok who is having a good year? The Rydex Managed Futures (RYMFX) fund is up slightly since it launched about 6 months ago (and Greg Newton examines the fund in his article ""). (run by some fellow Virginia alums) is up 17% with no drink years since inception:is up ~6% and hasn't had a down year since 1999 (And should be shipping in the next month - a 2nd perspective on the famous Turtle experiment):♦ ♦ ♦ You ask "Ok who is having a good year?"You left out Pardo Capital Limited's XT99 program which has posted the following returns -- 11.86% 08-2007 +53.78% 2007 YTD +354.03% Since InceptionBy the way.
