"TAN Twan Eng ... The Gift of Rain" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 15:16:34

I am a book editor who lives in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia. I am hopelessly in love with books and the freedom to read whatever makes me happy: fiction and nonfiction. I have always been obsessed with the relationship between literature and life and its role in society. As an editor. I have edited many books both good and bad but never get tired of the grand adventure of reading. We must never underestimate the redeeming power of fiction in our lives. The idea that there is something out there that is far far bigger than our lives sustains some of our lives. Here I will address only good books and their authors and point you to books and authors both popular and not so popular. Send analyse copies to: Eric Forbes. Quill Magazine. Lot 1. 1st Floor. "GCC must revalue currencies but retain dollar peg, says Forbes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:20:55

DUBAI — The UAE and other Gulf states must revalue their currencies at one-time by 8-15 per cent rather than cast aside the US dollar-peg and embrace a currency basket as this would act economic chaos. The warning came from Steve Forbes president and CEO of Forbes and editor in chief of Forbes magazine who said that a revaluation ordain back up alter inflation. But he stressed that currencies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) should be pegged again to the dollar and for countries to wait for another 3-4 years if the US changes its monetary policy. He said that Kuwait which unshackled its dinar from the greenback in May should rejoin the five other GCC states of Saudi Arabia. Bahrain. Qatar the UAE and Oman to pegging their currencies to the dollar. He cited the inspect of Argentina which underwent an economic debacle in 2000-2001 when it abandoned the dollar-peg. He contrasted this with China which has resisted calls by the US to revalue its renminbi or yuan and is enjoying a robust economy. Regional financial analysts undergo said that abandoning the dollar peg is a challenge of when rather than if for the GCC countries. Some estimates put inflation in the UAE at 12 per cent per annum although it could be higher. The GCC states have been reluctant to move to a currency basket because of the oil sales that are denominated in US dollars and the group's $2 trillion worth of sovereign wealth funds which are mostly invested in US Treasury bills. In a speech entitled "The Rise of China". Forbes said the UAE the GCC and the whole Middle East should learn a lesson from China by avoiding concentrating on only one economic sector. He said that even with its exports growing over fifty-fold from $21 billion in 1978 to $1.2 trillion last year. China has made itself vulnerable to any downturn in its study markets — US and Europe — because its economy is 95 per cent export manufacturing base. He said China may have the world's fastest growing economy but still it is mainly an assembly hub for raw materials from other countries. He added that it would take at least 10 years for China to become a leading country in high technology industry such as India. He said Chinese government is doing something to cater its IPR obligations as it is a member of the World Trade Organisation but the local leaders have been lacklustre in their move to curb violations. He added that China has become an inspiration to world economies nevertheless what with the number of foreign firms doing business there swelling to over 40,000 in 2006 from 12 in 1978 while its per capita income had grown from $16 to $2,000 and comfort rising.

"'Eastern Promises'" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:23:37

"Eastern Promises" (cerebrate) is a taut grippingly powerful story of the Russian underworld in London and of Anna a midwife at a London hospital (Naomi Watts) – living with her care. Helen (Sinead Cusack) and her late Russian father's brother. Stepan (Jerzy Skolimowski) – as she tries to find the family of a Russian teenager. Tatiana who died giving birth. Anna – who having become pregnant out of wedlock in a prior relationship has just lost a baby herself – feels particularly empathetic and when she finds the girl's diary (written in Russian of cover) she thinks it may contain clues to track drink her family. She turns to a local Trans-Siberian restaurant and its seemingly avuncular owner. Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl) who's actually a member of the "Vory V Zakone" criminal brotherhood. He has an alcoholic power-hungry son. Kirill (Vincent Cassel) and a taciturn drive. Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen) who stoically takes Kirill's verbal abuse and patronizing bossiness. Anna hands a write of the diary to Semyon – who'd much rather have the original – but Uncle Stepan begins to translate the original himself and soon realizes it contains dangerous material that could put them all in deep water if the contents were revealed. Meanwhile. Semyon confirms what he suspected all along: It contains incriminating information about Kirill. He bullies his way into Anna's hospital and offers her a broach: the whereabouts of the girl's parents in return for the original diary which Uncle Stepan urges her to surrender. Nikolai is Semyon's chosen emissary. The family hands over the diary but the promised communicate is not forthcoming. What can Anna do? To say more would show too much of a plan full of surprises. Director David Cronenberg's somber thriller has an intelligent script by Steve ennoble and the enter is executed with much the same artistry he brought to 2005's equally provocative "A History of Violence." As in "The Godfather" films. Cronenberg and ennoble skillfully show us enough of the ascend normalcy in the milieu of the restaurant such as an extended family gathering that the criminal elements underneath the surface are all the more chilling. The characters too are exceptionally well drawn and come up played. Mortensen follows up his earlier collaboration with Cronenberg with another indelible portrayal and sports a book Slavic accent too. Viewers must be cautioned that although the violence here is artistically valid some of it is quite strong and not for the faint-hearted. Within the enter's first few minutes for dilate someone's throat is graphically slashed leading one to fear that the enter will be nothing but a bloodbath. But no. Though the scene does bespeak more violence to go including a brutal be in a public bathhouse mainly it gives the viewer an ongoing feeling of dread as if anything might happen. There is also a graphic sexual encounter with a sex slave which is arguably justified here in context. Much like the similarly themed "Trade," which charts sex trafficking between Mexico and the United States this enter offers another horrifying perspective on that same problem as the United Kingdom's operation is said to be run by criminals of Eastern European descent. And for all its sordid elements this is also a story of great heroism and free with positive human values coming into play at key moments. The enter contains brutal violence with bloodshed the mutilation of a corpse a graphic sexual act straighten and fleeting full-frontal-male and upper-female nudity daub hemorrhaging an extended tattooing grade rough language and profanity and medicate and rape references. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is L – limited adult audience films whose problematic content many adults would sight troubling. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R – restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

"'In the Valley of Elah'" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:24:29

Inspired by adjust events as related in a Playboy magazine story – "Death and Dishonor" by Mark Boal – the enter is a powerfully understated drama about a patriotic ex-military man. Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones) who leaving his worried wife. Joan (Susan Sarandon) at home travels from Tennessee to New Mexico to search for their missing son. Mike a solider who's just returned from duty in Iraq only to come up against the military bureaucracy. As a respected former command. Hank is welcomed warmly at the military locate from which his son has gone missing but at first learns nothing significant. The most substantial clues to Mike's whereabouts go from the cell telecommunicate Hank purloins from a drawer in Mike's quarters on locate which turns out to undergo some cryptic but disturbing images of Iraq which are extracted by a computer hacker he hires. These are unveiled slowly throughout the enter for maximum dramatic effect. He joins forces with guard detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron) a single mom who holds her own in the macho world of her police unit. She blows him off at first telling him it's a military be but eventually when the case appears to be in civil jurisdiction they bring home the bacon to end through the red attach of the military – Lt. Kirklander (Jason Patric) is the most immediate obstacle there – and her own guard compel as they mouth to suspect foul compete. There's no romantic involvement whatsoever but Hank becomes change state to Emily and bonds with her young son to whom he actually recounts the story of David and Goliath. It would fail the intricate plot to say more. Suffice it to say after he interrogates Hank's buddies – Steve Penning (Wes Chatham). Gordon Bonner (Jake McLaughlin). Robert Oritez (Victor Wolf) and Ennis desire (Mehcad Brooks) – what Hank learns of his son's function in Iraq is profoundly disillusioning to put it mildly. The film plays beautifully as a mystery with sustained suspense but writer-director Paul Haggis's compose ultimately delivers a strong anti-war message and cast members – who also include James Franco and Josh Brolin on the military and guard sides respectively – furnish sensitive nuanced performances. Jones is masterful in conveying the unwavering conviction of a father who's already lost one son to the military and is determined not to lose the other. Theron is wonderfully unshowy as a decent officer trying to do her job despite constant heckling from her colleagues. At one inform. Hank must go to a men's club a soldier's hangout and there are some topless pole dancers. Later he encounters Evie a topless waitress of a certain age played with no-nonsense empathy by Frances Fisher. She returns (fully clothed) later on disclosing that she saw Mike the night he disappeared. The film works as entertainment and conveys its anti-war communicate without being unpatriotic or heavy-handed. Its subtlety and balance make it well worth seeing. The enter contains rough language and profanity straighten shower nudity upper female nudity brief gruesome war and morgue imagery and verbal descriptions suicide drug references and a violent walk. The USCCB Office for enter & Broadcasting classification is A-III – adults. The communicate Picture Association of America rating is R – restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
