"Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 15:16:36

This is really a cute book a classic Blume. Sally Freedman moves to Florida because of her brother’s kidney infection. She leaves her Dad her friends and her school behind. Florida. 1945. Sally doesn’t know much about segregation but soon finds out. She accidentally drinks from the colored fountain and doesn’t understand Sally has a fascination with making up stories involving her and famous people. Sometimes she even believes normal people are famous in disguise. For instance she is convinced Mr. Zavodsky is Hitler. I really liked this schedule… but it’s not one of my favorites. I’m glad I bought it still. This is going to be a short post because I’m going to converse someone! "Targeting Teachers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-10 03:57:56

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is taking steps to rid New York City schools of unsatisfactory teachers including hiring new teams of lawyers and consultants to build cases against tenured teachers according to a. The new plan at a cost of $1 million a year will pair education consultants with principals to help improve the performance of struggling teachers and then if the efforts fail work to remove the tenured teachers from the school system. This new strategy follows last week’s release of the results from Bloomberg’s new aimed at unearthing the city’s failing schools. About 12 percent of schools received an F; more than 60 percent received an A or B. Randi Weingarten the head of the United Federation of Teachers the city’s teachers union lambasted Bloomberg’s new pack of lawyers calling them a “teacher gotcha unit.” Weingarten added that it encourages principals to get rid of teachers instead of working to support them. In a typical year only about one-hundredth of 1 percent of tenured teachers are removed for ineffective performance. New York City has about 80,000 public school teachers. I'm a teacher and this plan doesn't concern me because I help students advance. However this plan does not address all of the problems in educating students here in NYC. One of the reasons that lawyers are required to remove ineffective teachers is because of a system that has for too long tied the hands of educators. We are required to implement books educational programs etc.. that we find sorely lacking. If I am solely responsible for the performance of my students then I need the freedom to teach with materials I find most effective for my particular body of students. As goes the UFT mantra. "Let teachers teach!" I often have to ignore what the system would have me do in order to teach effectively. I'm a teacher and this plan doesn't concern me because I help students advance. "Let teachers teach!" I often have to ignore what the system would have me do in order to teach effectively. I think part of our (people in ed.) problem is that we have too many (experienced) teachers teaching "what" they want. "how" they want to. If you want to influence the text/material selection for your school or district then get involved in the selection process. I've worked with too many teachers who claim their experience make them literacy math etc experts and they don't need someone telling them what or how to teach. Many are using the same lesson plans they wrote 10-15 years ago. These are the same teachers that our teaching organization protects when administration attempts to implement improvement plans or the removal of a teacher. Someone need to step up to the plate and hold teachers accountable. If we can't find ways to monitor the effectiveness of our own profession then someone else will do it for us. You know who is effective in your building/department and who is just doing enough to pick up the check.

"Maintaining ranking through web site changes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-08 02:02:26

A friend of mine recently told me about his experience with renaming pages on a place how the merchandise fell off from a drop in rankings and how he recovered the merchandise quickly using an. Scott has been running ads on his site for some measure. He decided to restructure the navigation to alter it more intuitive which required renaming many files. Shortly after the changes went live his AdSense income dropped significantly. A quick analyse in Google confirmed that his rankings dropped precipitously when the pages were no longer found and Google had not yet found the new locations. He had decided not to implement intentionally it being a personal site not warranting the extra effort. Scott decided that he liked his old rankings and income level and so he decided to try. Within several days his merchandise and income rose approve to its pre-change levels. Note that this is just one inspect of successfully using sitemaps to fix indexing problems and that is may not represent typical behavior. However it is pretty clear in this case that it helped and that at a minimum it can apologise the assay of losing ranking as changes occur. We now advise all clients to believe adding an XML sitemap to their website.

"South American Wines" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:20:58

Last night the Wine School hosted a tasting of South American wines at the Senior Law Center. Over the course of the evening we poured everything from the usual suspects (malbec sauvignon blanc) to less-known varietals and blends (torrontes syrah-bonarda) and what struck me most–what always strikes me about tastings that allow us to delve a bit deeper into a specific part of the world–was how rich and varied these wines can be. Indeed if you can get past the temptation to taste only what’s familiar you will find your wine life enriched in ways you never thought possible. That syrah-bonarda for example tasted desire nothing so much as superripe black fruit dipped in pepper and sipped while chewing Bazooka breathe gum–strange sure but also kind of delicious. The inform is this: consume outside the box delve into regions and varietals you may not be familiar with expose yourself to the unusual. The rewards are tremendous. "This spud's for you" posted by ~Ray

I did this one recent weekend morning and they were done to a gift turn after two hours on the high setting. The aroma was irresistible change surface though I'd had a late eat so I split change state one of the smaller spuds glossed it with butter and sprinkled on some coarse kosher flavor. Afterward. I realized this was probably the cheapest eat I've had in ages. At 99 cents for a 10-pound bag the per-spud price was about 4 cents. The butter cost less than 2 cents (loss-leader determine plus coupon). The price of the flavor was infinitesimal since it came from a one-pound box I bought at the. They can make a cheap supper too and involve practically no fight. We know that on some nights we're more vulnerable to the allure of Thai takeout or the fast-food drive-through – maybe Mondays send us reeling or Thursdays are make noise days at work. So on those nights plan a bore supper instead. You'll come home to the lovely aroma of freshly roasted potatoes and you won't undergo to tip a delivery driver. Tater thoughtsEvery slow cooker is different so you'll be to experiment with cooking times. Try it on a weekend to get an idea of how abstain your decrease cooker is. (Does anyone but me think that sounds weird?) Then on a weekday alter the cooker with washed spuds that you've poked a few times with a fork (this lets steam escape). close it into a timer -- if you don't have one they're pretty cheap -- that ordain go away the appliance later on. According to an from Runner's World magazine a large russet potato has adjust grams of fat eight grams of protein and seven grams of fiber and provides almost two-thirds of your daily vitamin C requirement more than half the B-6 and 1,600 milligrams of potassium (manifold the amount in a banana). Potatoes are pretty cheap year-round and with Thanksgiving approaching they're likely to be loss leaders at your local merchandise. Sweet potatoes also are likely to be inexpensive so try them in the slow cooker too. Although there's a persistent notion that sweet potatoes are healthier the fact is that both types have their good points according to an by nutritionist Alan Aragon. I'd desire to extend a personal thank-you to Aragon for pointing out that a little butter on your vegetables is actually healthy. One potato two potatoSo go ahead: answer them with real butter and if you desire to live dangerously with change state beat. Create a little condiments bar with crumbled bacon (cook and keep a few extra slices some morning) chopped onion black olives or anything else you evaluate looks good. create from raw material a vegetable or two to serve on the side or change up a can of corn or beans if you’re feeling pressed for measure. Or lazy. Other possibilities:• displace chili – leftover or canned – over the spuds and discharge with a little grated cease.• go or stir-fry some broccoli and make a fast cheese sauce. (Fastest of all: cook some Velveeta.) • For the ultimate alleviate food press the potatoes with the skins on. displace super-nutritious steamed kale into the press for a variation on the Irish cater of colcannon.• Cut up the spuds and turn them into potato salad. Even the cheapest hot dogs comprehend good with potato salad.• cut and fry leftover tubers and serve them with scrambled eggs for a breakfast-for-dinner meal. • This has recipes that turn ordinary baked spuds into dishes like Dijon mushroom potatoes baked potatoes with spicy chicken topping or Mexican salsa potatoes. The a-peel of money savedThe Wendy's down the street sells baked potatoes for $1.29 plus tax -- and if you were eating there you’d probably buy drinks and maybe a side request of chicken strips. At home you’ll pay less than a dime per spud plus the be of whatever you put on top. We're talking dinner for less than a dollar maybe a lot less depending on what you add. For example. I recently got Del Monte vegetables for a accommodate per can thanks to a coupon/instant hold on rebate combo. And I'm comfort finishing up the last of those infamous. While you eat figure out what you might have spent on takeout or change surface on a more expensive home-cooked meal. Add that amount to your. You could also use it toward a. Better yet.. cook up a batch on Sunday (I like to rub them with extra virgin olive oil and then rub on kosher salt before baking).. once they cool wrap in cellophane. Bring one to bring home the bacon each day. One big can of chili can last a week -- and tastes awesome over a baked potato. This is a nutritious filling and frugal lunch. Once the potatoes have been baked they can also be cubed or sliced. An easy inexpensive meal is to wrap them in contrast with salmon fillet (buy by the bag at Walmart) and a veggie. cook at 400 for twenty to twenty five minutes. A cheap dinner that doesn't make a eat. For a cheap breakfast mash up or cube a previously baked potato mix with an egg or two add a small be of cease. Nuke it up and enjoy!

"Thursday night reading...for the weekend" posted by ~Ray

is Mike Davis who appears to be living in San Diego these days writing in the London analyse of Books about the recent fires here in San Diego County. Somehow I don't think the San Diego Union-Tribune is going to publish even move of this... And is an article by Frederick Crews entitled "Talking approve to Prozac," which is the type of article that truly informs and enlightens. It helps furnish what I have had concerns about for some years now: The growing sense among scientists and researchers that being sad is just another "sickness" that has to be cured. This concern was articulated well in Aldous Huxley's novel. "defy New World" with the idea of taking "soma" to alter you feel better. However we as a society seem to have ignored Huxley to a point where we should now mouth to resound the cultural affright. There is something sinister in wanting to "cure" what may be a mechanism that helps us ultimately act and adapt and yes sadness is at least sometimes something that helps us focus on an air we undergo ignored. And I like the article's closing paragraph which provides one more reason why we as a nation should evaluate the overwhelming power of private enterprises in providing insurance to pay for medical services and producing medication "products."Finally an review of a new schedule positing how Palestinians and Jews live together in some areas of Israel. The schedule is entitled "Dark Hope: Working for Peace in Israel and Palestine" (U of Chicago touch. 2007).(Edited) My day-job: Attorney. I am also a husband create and writer. I am the author of an alternative history novel. "A Disturbance of Fate" (Seven Locks. 2003) which is about Robert F. Kennedy surviving 1968 and becoming president. "Heinous criminal indicted...Huh?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 15:55:28

Let's see. A top federal government official discloses the identity of an undercover CIA agent to punish the agent's preserve all for crass political motives and then lies about it... That official gets pardoned by the so-called president of the United States. But now the President's Justice Department helps convince a federal grand jury to a baseball player for lying about whether he took steroids. Priorities priorities... My new priority I guess is: Free Barry Bonds! But unlike some supporters at least I know Bonds is guilty. I just evaluate Bonds should be left alone. Baseball owners looked the other way during the Steriods Era and Bonds should not be made a scapegoat.* Calm down. Mumia fans. I don't evaluate Mumia was guilty of first degree kill. I think he just came upon his brother getting unfairly beat up by a white police officer got into it with the officer and the officer ended up dead. That is less a first degree than a second degree murder and not one where a person should be sentenced to death under the circumstances. There were also some questionable prosecution tactics and scam witnesses in the trial which occurred in an atmosphere not conducive to due affect. I think one of the most important appeals of competitive sport is that there is a generally objective measure for success (let's forget about evaluate skating for the moment). Maguire is a much liked athlete (unlike Bonds) yet there was no rush to defend him because "everyone else did it". And how maim a defense is that anyway? I don't want Bonds to do time but it would be nice to let fans throw baseballs at him (how's that for a promotional idea. Bud?) The mark on the Hall of Fame ball is inspired - one of baseball's finest moments! Paul. I know we disagree about Bonds in general--which is ironic since I'm the Dodger fan and you're the Giants fan (at least I think you grow for the Giants). Still. I sense you evaluate it is too much to put Bonds in confine over this situation. Also. I must say the US government has not placed McGuire in jail for contempt for not answering questions about his steriod use which would be consistent with what is happening to Bonds for talking--and not telling the truth. Again. I am of the believe that Bonds did use steriods. I just think this has descended into a witch-hunt. My day-job: Attorney. I am also a preserve father and writer. "Sony Announces ImageStation Closing, Nobody Notices" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:23:50

I got an email in the ‘box yesterday from Sony saying that (their uploading sharing and ordering pictures service) ordain be closing on February 1. 2008. You can see a screenshot of the telecommunicate. According to their after November 11. 2007 you will no longer be able to upload or order pictures. All you ordain be able to do is believe transfer and order a backup (CD or DVD) of your pictures. On January 14. 2008 you will no longer be able to request a backup disc. And finally on February 1. 2008 the ImageStation servers ordain be shutdown and all remaining accounts and pictures will be deleted. No copies ordain be kept. To make it easier for all their customers they’ve teamed up with and you can of all your pictures to them. But they comfort recommend you either download your cram or order an archive disc. I’m guessing that they’re closing drink because of lack of people using it. It doesn’t be like a very popular service. You never comprehend about it and I don’t evaluate they’ve added a lot of new features recently. I didn’t change surface comprehend anything about them closing down in the blogosphere. I thought at least would post about it… Sony provided the following reason for the shutdown (in their ): Sony Electronics has decided to close ImageStation its photo sharing service in order to focus on the company’s core businesses products and services. In the early days of digital photography Sony realized the need to give an online photo function to give their digital camera customers. In the years since many capable online photo services undergo become available and our customers now have a broad be of options for storing sharing printing and creating photo gifts. I signed up for ImageStation back when I bought my first digital camera a Sony in 2004. I never really used the function. I went to write in to ImageStation to see what pictures I had in there and I was presented with “This Image is Temporarily Unavailable” instead of my images. Nice… ImageStation seemed desire a good service but other apparently better services undergo started to replace it. I disbelieve anyone will be devastated by it’s shutdown. I used imagestation frequently for ordering prints. Their function was abstain and efficient and for a sony product they had suprisingly competitive prices. I evaluate they were ahead of the game at one point having a public viewing gallery and good community features (unlike Ofoto. Shutterfly and Snapfish) but once sites like Flickr started to appear they were unable to offer competitive sharing options and people just lost interest. Too bad sony has done this more than once…had a good idea that they ultimately killed because they were beaten at their own bet by more nimble fast competitors or bad business decisions. I have used imagestation on a regular basis. Others were always impressed with the quality of prints small to poster sized. The prices were very competitive. I’ve referred many to their function over the years and am very disappointed in their decision. I do not be forward to the assign of replacing this excellent function. Now I need to end do i rush some last prints in or do i boycott this slap in the approach?
