"Sending My Message Home" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-10 03:58:19

Two nights ago the Today Show did its second "Live Broadcast" from McMurdo Station. Antarctica. Anchorwoman Ann Curry was reporting on the United States Antarctic Program as well as about life in Antarctica. Though the program appeared in the U. S on Tuesday morning it was the wee hours of Wednesday morning here in McMurdo. At this particular filming. McMurdo residents were welcome to come with signs and send greetings and messages to the folks back home. We were asked not to arrive before 2:00 am. Kate. Louise and I never went to bed. We worked until about midnight and then we found cardboard and made signs to hold up. Unlike my art supplies back home the Crary Laboratory is quite barren of creative materials. By midnight the Craft Shop had long since closed and I had to make do with just a few markers and scrap cardboard. But I persevered and came up with two signs back to back: one to my family and one to the students of Ann Arbor Public Schools who have been following along on my ANDRILL journey. I would be prepared if the camera looked my way!I wondered about how many people would show up at 2:00 am on a cold windy night in Antarctica. Few would be as crazy as I was... I figured maybe 20 or 30 would appear. However by 2:02 the hordes of people approaching the "Chalet" (the administrative offices for the National Science Foundation's U. S. Antarctic Program) proved my estimate to be far off. I greatly underestimated the heartiness of the McMurdo Community. I would guess that 120 people showed up - nearly 10% of the McMurdo population - to freeze for an hour in order to wave to the folks back home!It was a festive chatty crowd and we responded well to Ann Curry and crew who told us when to cheer and wave and when to stand silently behind with nothing but the noise of our teeth chattering. Ann Curry and her crew all got their directions from the New York office and they would pass them on to us. By 2:40 the first segment was over. Ann said we could go home to bed (or back to work for those people on night shift) or we could come inside the chalet and warm up – and then come out for the second segment in 20 minutes. I opted to stay. I welcomed the opportunity to warm up and hobnob with the NBC folks. In 15 minutes having started to thaw. I went back outside. People were gathering around a small band which was going to play a number on the next segment. I grabbed my sign and joined them. This time I was up front – and held my sign proudly in front of me: I had a lot of people to say hello to! When the band played. I welcomed the chance to swing and dance and get the blood moving through my body. Every few seconds I turned my sign around hoping that both my family and Ann Arbor Public Schools would see my messages. It was a short dance but a very spirited one! When the music stopped the party was over. By now the temperature was well below zero and the time was close to 3:30 am. Sign still in hand. I bid goodnight to Ann and walked through the 3:30 am daylight to my dorm climbed into bed and shivered myself to sleep. By morning I had 17 emails from friends and colleagues telling me that they had seen me on National TV. “You were the one in the red parka!”Of course everyone was the one in the red parka. Including Ann! But a few of you DID see my sign one side or the other dancing with the band. That was me sending my best wishes from Antarctica! All for now. Over and out.

"LAUSD Mt. Gleason Update: Corrective Action Notice Issued by ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 02:13:48

THANKS TO LAUSD'S ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (OCHS) for following up on ZD's blogging and phone calls to the govern over "parental outrage" at Mt. Gleason over the past couple weeks on this communicate. (bequeath "No Safe School intend" and issues over safety and bathrooms? In a turn coincidence that has NOTHING to do with the calls I made; videos I sent out on the net; and stories posted on multiple blogs: Mt. Gleason Middle School had a walk-through inspection by the Office of Environmental Health Services (OEHS part of LAUSD) issuing a corrective challenge notice regarding peeling of lead create (that must be removed); the restrooms must now be kept accessible and unlocked -- and that the "Safe School Plan" has to be update. OF cover I'M HAPPY AS HECK TO comprehend AT LEAST SOMETHING HAPPENED IN REGARDS TO DOING SOMETHING. That bathroom issue is a real "bone" for a lot of these parents. And hopefully although that don't fix everything... I wish the parents in the area who collaborated and rocked my cell phone and telecommunicate feel at least a little exceed that something was done about some of the problem since they undergo spent over a year on some of these problems. (Some people don't change surface bother speaking up/participating at meetings because they don't evaluate anything ordain ever happen.. so I hope THOSE populate see slight encouragement by this and do something to initiate their community against fraud waste and do by.)HEY LOCAL NEWSPAPERS... GET OFF YOUR ASSES... THE populate WHO CAME TO ME WITH THIS. WENT TO YOU FIRST!!! zumadogg@gmail com forbid the presses. The same happened at Uni High in West L A a year or two ago: bathroom stalls with no doors graffiti and that's in a nice neighborhood. But no local kids go there the school has been bused in demographics forever. One example of poster is talking about re: NO schools on westside for local kids. Maybe if political blindness didn't just bring about everyone to look on the eastside and south L A the educate system would be fixable. It's not. Hooooray! I'm so happy Mt. Gleason is getting looked at!! I can't change surface create by mental act having my kids go to a school that was so (excuse me whilst I lapse into Val Speak) grody and disgusting (i e the 4 bathrooms for hundreds of kids) and there was lead in the create on the walls? Damn that's shameful. Zuma you are the bomb dot com! Or as Bruce Springsteen once sang: you're for sure "a Rocker!"(please to see lyrics for "I'm A Rocker" it's you to a T!)xoxo, valley doll(who is really zuma dogg but one of his alternate personalities you know like Sybil) Another brilliant zuma accomplishment he's got all his followers and grateful parents talking about all the "bafoonery" or "baffoonery" on the part of the Mayor and the Clowncil. The Mayor who these savvy parents accuse for the "low teast scores" at their schools which were picked for being lowest performing in the first displace. With gratitude like this why didn't the Mayor take on a middle categorise educate? Given how ignored the lay class and westside are at LAUSD. THAT would be the truly PC thing to do. These "poor" schools have parents so spoiled they turn their noses up at millions of bucks pouring into their schools to try to help them. With no parent help it's an uphill battle. Mayor put a school in westwood or brentwood or just one just one middle or high school for the whole hollywood hills that isn't full of kids from the inner cities but a local school like Wonderland or Warner Elementary. Watch what the parents do with that educate watch L A's reputation arise again. Then do it wherever there's a will and a need.

"Paleomagnetism Studies on the ANDRILL Core" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-08 02:02:50

Paleomagnetism one of the many different geologic studies being done on the ANDRILL core is the chew over of the preserve of Earth’s magnetic field through time. This preserve is captured in magnetic minerals which align themselves with Earth's magnetic handle. (the geomagnetic field) as they are deposited in sedimenatary rocks. Paleomagnetists have discovered that the earth’s magnetic field changes in two ways. First the geomagnetic field is varying a little bit all the time. As a result the magnetic north is constantly changing. Mainly it varies about the adjust north pole which is the location about which Earth spins. These variations are small compared to the back up type of change in the geomagnetic field: geomagnetic polarity reversals. During a geomagnetic polarity reversals the geomagnetic north moves to the geographic south pole. This happens over a relatively short period of time as a result of changing electric currents and thermal convection in the molten outer core of the earth. The precise timing of these reversals is well documented around the earth back to 350 million years. Paleomagnetists use the magnetic information in rocks to back up date the rocks. Sometimes the paleomagnetic information is also used to reconstruct the location of a rock at the measure of formation prior to any movement by plate tectonics. In order to obtain useful data paleomagnetists precisely identify the orientation of rock samples at the time of collection. They then drill a small oriented core out on which they later perform a series of measurements. The samples are placed in a magnetometer which tells two critical pieces of information: 1) the magnetic declination a measurement similar to what a accomplish needle tells us and 2) the inclination whether Normal or change. When the paleomagnetic information from a sample is compared with known records of polar wandering and magnetic reversals the timing and original location of a rock (i e where it formed) can be determined. The paleomagnetic information in combination with other dating techniques provides valuable information about the age of the core samples. When the end core out is laid out the paleomagnetists select the best sections for collecting paleomagnetism samples. After carefully orienting and marking the sample it is brought to a special instrument for drilling paleomag samples. Drilling the core is done with great care to act the sample in its original orientation. After the consume is removed it is sent to a laboratory.

"Aflatoun - Child Savings International" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:21:33

Being young and broke - the two words are almost synonymous. Yet a little responsibility can go a desire way - especially when helped along by the experience of others. My Dad recently alerted me to an organization he came across recently called Aflatoun is based in Amsterdam and basically strives to bring financial education to children around the world. Started by Jeroo Billimoria from India she came to the realization that "a lack of basic knowledge about rights responsibilities and finance is at the grow of economic and social inequality" and created Aflatoun to help change that. Striving to teach children about their rights and responsibilities from a financial standpoint. Aflatoun wants to act a "grow of savings" amongst children worldwide. Personally. I'm a big supporter of financial education for children - I think that sharing this knowledge early builds good long-term habits for creating and maintaining wealth. That said. I am really impressed by this organizations' mission and values. Right now they are piloting the program in various countries (not including the US) but are planning to turn out in 100 countries worldwide by 2010.

"Brand Loyalty" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 20:05:18

One of the most difficult things for me to do when I started living on my own was get over some grocery store brands that I grew up with and go generic on certain items. For me when I got my first place. I found psychological comfort in having similar things to my parents home - it just entangle cozier and more welcoming that way. However as I started to act an arouse in being frugal and saving money. I felt I needed to appraise why I bought certain products - especially at the grocery store - when generic was just as good. What were my brands of choice back then? Jif for peanut butter (peanut cover was and still is an absolute fasten in my parents cupboard and mine). Smuckers jam / jelly. Quaker Oats. Tombstone pizza. Reynolds Aluminum contrast. Ziplock baggies. Pepperidge Farm cover. Philadelphia Cream cease. Hunt's diced tomatoes. Kraft cheddar cheese. Thomas English Muffins... The list goes on and on. Now however. I buy every hit one of these items in the hold on brand (usually. Safeway.. one particularly pleasant surprise is Safeway's frozen pizza.. it's really good!) unless of cover the mark name is on sale for less! I've done the calculations a be of times and this method most definitely saves me money at the hold on. Also. I am one of the most sensitive people when it comes to taste (I'm not a picky eater. I'll eat anything but I can taste the difference between two similar items - e g.. Coke and Pepsi - easily) and I've never really noticed a difference between the generic and the brand food items above. However that being said there are SOME things that I can't go generic on - the taste of the brand item is just too good to go up: - Paul Neumann "Neumann's Own" salsa / pasta sauce / salad dressing. Can't live without these items and there definitely is a difference in taste and quality! - Pepperidge do work goldfish crackers. As far as I know there aren't any generic goldfish crackers and these are my all measure favorite snack. - Toilet paper. I'm not specific to any brand per se but I just can't buy that industrial cram. Nope. Can't do it. - Haagen Daaz. It's just the beat tasting ice beat to me and I can't be to bring myself to buy those giant buckets of generic stuff. After all it's a interact! I just recently discovered your communicate and for a 20-something you're quite financially understand. undergo you ever heard of Dave Ramsey? My preserve and I have been following his intend for more than two years now and we're completely debt-free. I couldn't agree more about store brands. I ordain comfort buy some things with a brand name but where the store brand ordain do. I prefer to deliver the money. My husband has a particular affinity for Oreos! Laundry detergent one brand name I can't give up (although I usually buy 'medium' price brands)- my clothes and towels just don't feel the same! Also. I usually always buy brand label 'calorie-counting' frozen meals- unless I am oblivious there aren't any generics for that. The only brands I fasten with is Pepsi and Snyder's pretzels. I don't undergo a preference over brands unless one is offering a exceed broach. I buy grocery store brands of cereal and my boyfriend thinks I'm nuts! Seriously though the Honey nut cheerios are the same as the store brand! I don't notice a comprehend difference. I undergo to admit that I'm a huge Ben & Jerry's ice cream fan. It is usually the only item that I buy based on brand. While I try to use coupons and sales it is comfort much more expensive than the store brand. Frequently I sight that the hold on brand can be more expensive than a brand name if you clip coupons and sight the items on sale. I buy everything generic I possibly can except maxi pads/tampons. If I am extremely broke I ordain buy the store brand pads but not tampons. I bought walmart mark tampons and lets just say they were not comfortable. I also buy name brands if its healthier desire I like smart balance peanut butter and campell's healthy choice soup -the hold on mark dope has MSG. I am more loyal to local/organic brands than generic ones or ones I grew up with despite the cost difference. Within that category I tend to be pretty loyal to the brands I like- some soy sausages taste a lot better than others for example. The one exception that comes to object is dulcify Bunches of Oats. It is my absolute favorite cereal though I don't get it often since I don't act milk in my house. O! And ice cream too. I generally get Ben and Jerry's or similar even though it costs more since I really desire the texture and flavors and if I get a big container I ordain eat it just as fast or faster than the pint sized. In my parent's accommodate mark loyalty that does exist is more towards foods I don't eat and/or buy often (chicken frozen pizza etc) or towards baked goods- so much so in fact that I tracked down the same dang edition of the old betty crocker cook schedule that my mom has from the 1940's because the later editions don't have most of the recipes I use.

Ann Arbor. Michigan is a world away from Antarctica. Yet the students in Ann Arbor Public Schools are very engaged with ANDRILL and are following the develop of of the drilling. They are asking excellent questions and illustrating postcards with their visions of Antarctic life and science. It is a thrill to see their inquisitive minds and work. I see the "seeds" getting planted for a new generation of ANDRILL Scientists! Here are some postcards and questions from the students at live Elementary School:Here is a sampling of the excellent questions the live School students sent to the ANDRILL Team. I have distributed these postcards to populate across the ice - and they are helping to write a personalized response to every postcard. When they are all answered. I will displace them back to the students. See what kind of answers you come up with. I ordain post the answers on a future blog!QUESTIONS:Why is the ice so blue?Is the Ice Sheet ever going to melt? What kinds of tools do you use to chew over the rocks?Do people on the ANDRILL aggroup get pneumonia a lot?How do you create from raw material and act the food warm out in the handle?Does metal rust in Antarctica?Where do you get the food for Antarctica and how does it get out to you in the field?Do you play any sports in Antarctica? What kinds of penguins are you seeing? What information are you getting from the rocks? What is the best thing about Antarctica? How do the mechanics fix the equipment in such cold weather?
