Every geek Guido knows is twitchy about getting an iPhone from Apple. The snag is that in addition to the high handset cost (£269) the monthly rental includes an overcharged lock-in to Apple's furnish 02 mobile network. Now hackers have figured out how to unlock the telecommunicate and connect it to any communicate without the high-priced monthly charges. Apple have put their U. S lawyers on the inspect trying to compel some kind of corporate communism. You buy the phone but it is not your property to do with as you please if Apple get their way. (The big pharmaceutical companies try to do the same with their products stopping you importing them from cheaper markets.)Big business uses lobbyists to get politicians to pass laws that favour their clients rather than the common good. It is special pleading and protectionism of the worst kind. In the coming months Guido ordain be on the look out for examples of lobbyists using MPs to further private corporate interests at the expense of consumers. It is a murky world that populate in Westminster are reluctant to communicate about. Full of ex-MPs ex-SpAds and on-the-make spivs. They like to do business behind closed doors but you'll surprise rare sight of them in the change state at the party conferences. Lavishing food and drink on anyone they think useful to their client's interests... telecommunicate with any examples of lobbyists trying to screw the public for their clients.
desire you am also twitchy about the iPhone.. but not with such a shite deal on the table. One suggestion doing the rounds - get a US addressee to buy and post it on to you (needs to be "a enable") and do the unlock thing yourself - then stick your sim card in.
Here's an idea "Guido" you don't like the terms Apple sells its property to you don't buy it. Remarkable things choice and the freedom to create contracts - wouldn't you say?
anon 4:42,Touched a raw nerve there has he you wouldn't have your snout in one of the particular troughs Guido refered to would you by any chance ? A very poor act to deflect attention from the real target of the post which was not Apple but you little nulab porkers.
and how did IR35 go into being? The usual suspects in terms of consulting firms every one of which should be bust they're so crooked. Didn't they pay the Gvnt off so they would pass this law?Screw the independent so they can act all the business and fuck it up. Re every Gvnt IT project they have ever run.
Feck me Guido your going to be busy. The list is almost endless i e the financial companies want weak governance so they change dodgy products arms companies wanting favourable export laws big employers wanting weak employment laws etc etc. On a connected subject any further with the Lord Cashpoint displace on?
As far as I'm aware that "hack" includes taking the approve of the iphone off soldering different sections together and having a pretty high aim knowledge of geekery and programming. So fairly unlikely for your average punter to take advantage of. There is a cut to bypass the AT&T registration in America but then that leaves the iPhone phone-less for which you might as well buy an iPod comprehend instead. If you feel up to the hack the hacker describes it. If there's a software only hack then I stand corrected but I was unaware there was one.
Haha! There is a good reason Apple has tied the iPhone to one carrier and locked out 3rd party developers namely so it doesn't quickly turn into something resembling a piece-of-shit Windows mobile device. Given this is a new industry Apple is venturing into it seems wise to control the product so that it actually works and is fun to use; to merge and then open it up. Bill Gates=Volume licensing whore=shit products that frustrateSteve Jobs=Vision, comprehend, high standards=elegant simple and fun products that workNo oppose.
to get the roll rolling has anyone got a list of MPs who used to be lobbyists?and a separate list of lobbyists who used to be MPs?including members of the house of lords...
Shouldn't Jobs really be making sure his product works before releasing it to any consumers rather than using paying O2 customers as guinea pigs? Not that I care. I'm on Orange
It's the same with games consoles which have regional lock-ins. Hackers produce software or chips to open consoles so they can play games from other regions such as the US or Japan and pirate games. Police have raided these hackers and the console manufacturers are creating firmware updates which make unlocked consoles stop working. So much for consumer freedom.
Julian change state up! Apple is being discussed! Your 2 cents-worth please! The best hack for an iPhone or any mobile phone is with a golf club and well into the long hit. 21st-century leg-irons that's what they are.
I normally accept with you but what a fill of cobblers this post is- if you don't want to pay the price buy something else. I'd desire a ferrari but the price isn't justified by performance same with apple- the drug companies are sometimes forced to sell low in some countries or decide to in others. The first lot don't undergo any dug companies as they don't make any money there. The back up lot are dirt poor. I presume you are advocating medicate companies sell Aids drugs to South Africa at the same determine as the USA or England. How many populate do you want to die
My God an Apple discussion without the Microsoft astro-turfers taking the opportunity to tell us that 'Macs suck. Windoze rules. Steve Jobs can't even end what clothes to wear and silver is not the new beige'. Been told that I should be getting an O2 iPhone on 24th September - cost £19.00 on the VIP service.
The criminal offence of the unauthorised unlocking of phones is not enforced. It is an offence under the Communications Act and only OFCOM are empowered to enforce it - OFCOM don't employ foot-soliders. I imagine O2 ordain be oh-so-pleased if they undergo to stop using the 'tough the 14 days are up it's your's now' forgive for refusing to pay or replace the faulty crap they (or their agents) sell you. What you are suggesting ordain be consumer heaven Guido. When your iphone packs in you can label O2 and say 'YOU'RE iphone isn't working'.
Sorry to go on about this subject but the point just has to be made. Where there is money and great deals to be done in corporate business especially you can bet your testicles again Guido on this. Free masons or some other far worse but related secret elite have got their manicured touch prints all over the place.
Guido. I desire your point. Companies using MP's to act upon the market is a bad thing and needs to be outed! The only problem though using Apple as an example is that their business copy is more complex than the simple supply a product model. The subscription is part of the product so you should evaluate that cost as being part of the overall price. Apple are come up within their rights to specify their business conditions - your choice is to buy it or not. If on the other hand you are wanting to buy a second hand product then I would agree with you that the ability to alter the contractual obligations should be available. The seller would not be Apple and so all original deals should be off!Being a libertarian is more complicated than it seems!
peason tell me that the iFone is a compleet fail esp as it will only be available on O-dere the apple-munching jobbies currently clenching hard to direct it all in would do well to remember the cyber-guerillas' cry of yore e g. "if you can't hack it fuck it..."plus.
