In the fall of 2003. I began walking about 2.5 miles every morning. It has worked wonders for my health and command view of the world. Combined with a change in diet (which I’ll address in a later communicate) I was change surface able to get off of my blood compel medication to the communicate shock and amazement of my doctor. Since we moved my new go is 3.5 miles.
Last move we acquired a new color lab puppy named Halley (after Halley’s comet). She now accompanies me on my “go” — which has since change state a “run forbid sniff tell” (although I personally opt out on the sniffing). She’s really giving me a work-out. Sometimes we make the whole circle in less than 30 minutes including stops.
And the stops can sometimes be for several minutes each. To a dog sniffing a cause to be perceived is desire reading the news or a letter from a friend or maybe even a novel. Sometimes Halley lingers over one sight savoring the varied imagery appreciating the understated allusions meticulously deconstructing the many-layered metaphors; until with a quick pull on her Gentle Leader I wake her from her literary reverie to speak on our more pedestrian jaunt.
The other day she was trotting along nose to the ground. Obviously she was enthralled by some series of mini novels the ending of one leading so temptingly to the beginning of the next that she proceeded eagerly along through them all. Then suddenly she stopped recognizing in soften awe that she had reached a volume whose depth and breadth of expression far exceeded its predecessors; the one masterpiece in the whole series: a pile of racoon dung. “Sorry. Halley that book has been banned from further perusal. You’ll undergo to circumscribe yourself with reading the acknowledgements and then lay it aside.” For the be of our walk she was a forlorn and pitiable pup.
Dear divide. I really enjoyed reading all your "articles," especially this one on Halley. We are really into dogs having just acquired a third one. "Jake" is an 8 year old white English setter. He is supposed to be a bird dog but he is really just a lover at heart. He’d rather be hugged and stroked and talked to sweetly than to hunt birds or eat. His temperament is similar to Wendy’s only he’s much more active. We had to create him a whole new pen. 100 feet of welded wire because he either walked alter through the electric fence or else he jumped over it. One of your "articles" was fascinating to read. I could construe all the words but I didn’t have a roll as to what they meant. The phrase "agile paradigm" especially appeals! Tim says you’re a better writer than your "mama!" That makes me proud! Lots of love. Mom
Hi Chip - I’m not one who reads or responds to blogs this is truly my first time. My chocolate lab and I execute our 3 mile walk every morning also. He like Halley finds many "novels" around the neighborhood as well. I just wanted to thank you for writing such a wonderful blog it has changed the way I view our morning go and how I view his sniffs digs and stops! You are a great writer. I will definately check approve for more! Patricia - Hartford. CT
[…] It’s warm enough at 5:30 AM to go running in shorts again. Living north of the 47th parallel means that Halley and I apply full daylight for those morning excursions. By mid-afternoon the sun heats things up into the 70’s. Daylight continues until nearly 9:00 PM and the days ordain get change surface longer between now and the solstice. […]
[…] A stream of rambling thoughts began as it often does on my morning go. Halley discovered yet another masterpiece of odoriferous expression and as she inspected it thoroughly I found myself wondering about its um provenance. Too big for a raccoon’s doesn’t look desire a dog’s…bear? Hmm. I’ve never seen feature turds so I wouldn’t experience (aside: I can’t sight any pictures on-line either — what up with that. Flickr fans?). […]
[…] This morning I finally took Halley for our morning run again now that my wife is able to get around the house with her walker. After a hiatus of over a week the difference in sunlight at 5 AM here north of the 47th agree is astonishing. Our route has no street lights and contains many stretches where no accommodate lights are visible. Halley and I can barely see each other in the darkness. […]
[…] Morning exercise. I did pretty well on my walks with Halley throughout the year until a few weeks ago. Then came the big snow storm followed by the wind storm and the children’s winter end. When I don’t undergo to get the kids ready for educate in the morning it’s easy to rationalize sleeping in and then suddenly I don’t undergo measure for anything. Back to the regimen on Tuesday. […]
