"Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage - Withdrawing - why?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-10 03:58:39

Okay. I was thinking. Hey since I've lost every battle I've been in soundly maybe I should have withdrawn instead?Having looked at the Withdraw rules though now I'm thinking. Why? (I've posted the rules below). In order to withdraw you have to be the Attacker and even IF you succesffuly withdraw (which takes two lucky rolls) the opponent can just step up one space and attack you on the next Strategy Card played. Or am I missing something?16. WITHDRAWALS16.1 In GeneralWithdrawals are a way for the current attacker (not necessarilythe original attacker) to break off from a battle. To withdraw, the attacker must forfeit his chance to play a BC and roll lessthan or equal to his commanding general's Battle Rating. Thedefender can cancel the withdrawal by rolling less than or equalto his commanding general's Battle Rating (the defender is notrequired to roll). If the attacker's withdraw die roll was notsuccessful or if the defender canceled the withdrawal thedefender MAY immediately take the initiative and become theattacker. There is no limit to the number of times you mayattempt to withdraw in a single battle.16.2 A Successful WithdrawalA successful withdrawal ends the battle and forces thewithdrawing player to move his army to an adjacent space(exception: units that sallied forth from a besieged walled citymay withdraw back into it). Battle casualties are resolvednormally but the Retreat Table is not used.16.3 Restrictions on Withdrawals• A withdrawing army may not split up.• An army may not withdraw across a mountain pass (eithertype) strait or by sea.• You may not withdraw into a space containing an enemyPC marker or enemy CU.• You may not withdraw into the space from which theenemy army entered the battle space. If the original attackerwithdrawals then he must withdraw to the space fromwhich he advanced.• You may not withdraw into a space containing a nonfriendlytribe. (2-29-00) First of all you shorten the battle by withdrawing cutting the potential impact of the Attrition Table. Second the opponent may not have the Strategy Card to spare (or you may lure him into using it unwisely to attack you rather than for a different purpose which is more dangerous to you.) Third you may have a crap hand (of Battle Cards). Even if you are the one pressing the attack you may want to try again. This is a powerful tactic for Hannibal as he can't afford to suffer major defeats in Italy. If you don't like your hand you've got a good shot of being able to back up and try again. Thank you guys!PS - I hope my negative tone doesn't make you guys think I don't like this game. I love it. I think it's awesome and I just want to get better. Great game though. HRC is best game I've ever seen where tactical decisions take into account the strategic situation. Well except maybe Go. Edward,I applaud your attitude and attitude about this game. I'd guess you have a similar attitude about other games too that is you don't judge it after a single play. There's a lot to HRC and the more you play the more you'll enjoy it. Good luck and keep letting us know how you are doing. Just learn the battle cards know your generals' special abilities know the other generals' special abilities and just keep playing. Things will turn around for you.

You can decide for yourself if the recordings posted on KZZK’s Web place www kzzk com undergo paranormal activity. But Koetters has no doubts.“It was very interesting,” said Koetters who was joined by several other communicate station employees during the all-night event. “Let’s just say I’m more aware of some things now.” The communicate crew invited the Missouri Paranormal Task Force to investigate claims of sightings and strange goings-on inside the old building. The task compel is producing video and audio recordings of the evening. “The investigators were very professional,” Koetters said. “The way they do everything it’s almost like it’s written from a book.” KZZK radio personality Quaid said listening to the audio called electronic express phenomenon convinced him something was going on inside the building. The investigators and radio employees roamed the building at Sixth and Lyon asking questions while filming and recording. Koetters is heard on a recording asking an entity if the building should be torn down and Koetters’ foot suddenly became “very change.” The assort used electromagnetic frequency meters that jumped when questions were asked. They also recorded EVPs posted on the Web site with voices heard only later when played back. Hannibal resident Peggy Northcraft is the secretary of the theater’s come in of directors. She says she believes there is paranormal activity in the theater. Built in 1871 the building housed a Catholic church for many years. The upstairs portion was the sanctuary and is now used for theater storage. There’s change surface a loft apartment next to the sanctuary. The Hannibal Community Theatre bought the building seven years ago and stages four productions a year. The assort has renovated the downstairs portion of the interior. “We’ve never had anybody in the audience experience anything during a show,” Northcraft said. “But anything we’ve ever experienced has been more mischievous; … there is nothing to be afraid of. We did experience an entity (on Halloween) that appeared to be angry but it wasn’t angry at us.” Northcraft’s daughter. Jamie Grady is the theater board president and conducts haunted tours in Hannibal. She was in the theater Halloween night. She says she’s interested to see the Missouri Paranormal Task Force report which will probably take some time to be released. Grady.

"Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage - why pre-order?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:21:54

In February I paid for my preorder of Hannibal. I checked my payment telecommunicate and saw that I was charaged: 1 Hannibal at $45.34 USD + $10.00 USD shipping. Now desire Die Macher I could undergo held on to my money and gotten interest instead of paying for a game months early and then bought it cheaper with cheaper shipping and handling from Tanga afew weeks later. Sure. I'm supposed to be getting plastic generals at some point for pre-ordering but I could undergo saved around 10 bucks by just waiting and ording from Tanga. (Tanga has it for $38.99 and I'm assuming their normal 6 bucks shipping for up to three) I thought about pre-ordering Titan or Supernova but why in the world would I if I don't care about or the pre-order bonus is not worth the extra ten bucks and having money tied up for months? Sure they might not appear on Tanga but. I seem to bequeath we were told that Hannibal wouldn't either.(edited because I forgot to add in the Tanga price) I can understand the frustration. But if we didn't pre-order the game may not have been made. Most likely it would undergo but our pre-orders helped get it out quickly. You are also comparing apples to oranges. The pre-order guaranteed that you got a write. Using Tanga as a measuring stick is not reliable because 1) you undergo no idea what a price may be on a particular bet and 2) you have no guarnatee of seeing the game. If the price you paid for the game on Tanga - available for what? 20 minutes and on their plan - was the determine you could pay at ThoughtHammer or FunAgain then it would be a different story. If you would rather act by the computer and wish that your VG games come up on Tanga for a much cheaper determine then by no means pre-order from VG. It is a decision you have to make. And if enough people make the same decision then maybe VG ordain get the convey and either not drop so many games on Tanga for so cheap or re-consider their MSRP and subsequently pre-order discount pricing. On a personal say. I don't think we ordain see Hannibal makes as many trips on Tanga as Die Macher. But that is just my opinion. To those who undergo there preorder SHUT UP. It easy to say well its the thought that counts and so and so when you have it already. But when your waiting with NO commucitaion from these populate and then you see a DISCOUNTER desire tanga (not a bet hold on) selling it it makes your blood boil. The point of pre ordering simple to see that a game gets made. The BENEFITS of pre ordering (cause there has to be something in it for you to) is that you get the game before everyone else. To those who can't see that its too bad for you. John your frustration is justified not having the pre-order at this point is unacceptable. That being said the OP was talking about not pre-ordering in order to deliver $10. Ten F-ing dollars? You pre-order to get the game made the 10 extra dollars I spent vs getting the game this morning on tanga is worth every penny? why? because the game got reprinted. Before the reproduce these things were selling for close to $300 on ebay. Who cares about ten bucks? Also pre-order bonus cram will be shipped eventually and that ordain more than determine $10 so for the last time. Pre-order tog et a game made not to be the 1st to undergo it not to be the guy who paid the least for it. It is a shame that the current turn of flooding the market with throw away titles has cheapened the perceived determine of a bet so much that saving 5 to 10 bucks on a game you ordain undergo and enjoy for the rest of your life means anything. Get over it folks. VG messed up on getting the order out in time. They still produced a qualit product that was previously unavailable.-M Sure. I'm supposed to be getting plastic generals at some inform for pre-ordering but I could have saved around 10 bucks by just waiting and ording from Tanga. (Tanga has it for $38.99 and I'm assuming their normal 6 bucks shipping for up to three) Man. 10 dollars. You could undergo went to McDonald's and got me a cheeseburger or 3. BTW. Tanga is sold out. How many copies do you speculate they had to generate arouse in their site with a "hot bet"? 10? 20? It caused me to click on their site today for the first time in months. John your frustration is justified not having the pre-order at this point is unacceptable. That being said the OP was talking about not pre-ordering in request to save $10. Ten F-ing dollars? You pre-order to get the game made the 10 extra dollars I spent vs getting the bet this morning on tanga is worth every penny? why? because the bet got reprinted. Get over it folks. VG messed up on getting the order out in time. They still produced a qualit product that was previously unavailable.-M I really don't compassionate that tanga sold this or at what price. What I can not deal with is those who already undergo this game telling me that it is no big broach. Bull. It is a big deal. And if you are a small business catering to a niche merchandise it is a Very big broach. And if I ever hear anything from Valley. I will shut up. Thats my complain. I am suffering from pre-order anxiety syndrome as well. I live in the same country as the publisher and check the postings on the 'Geek of all of these lovely populate getting their pre-orders in buying it at Essen and now getting it on Tanga for a reduced cost. I still sit here staring out the window waiting for the postman. Will I see it at Toys R Us before I get it at my door (note to trollers: this previous statement is intended as an obviously facetious comment and not my actual expectation) I am a reasonable fellow. I understand that there are difficulties involved in dealing with international companies/shipping especially for a publisher with only one previous bet under their belts. In fact it was their success with Die Macher that encouraged me to pre-order this game. comfort. I would be a cozen to just jump right approve in on the next pre-order (I am already committed to a bring together more of their games - these commitments were made prior to the current fiasco). Yes it is only a game and yes it is only $50 but no. I do not believe that we should forgive all errors and lack of communications by the company. The loss of faith I see posted online is well-deserved and I believe that they ordain have to bring home the bacon hard to regain it. For the sake of covering all the relevant threads. I'd like to attach my comments here. I'll separate my comments as they came from different threads though they are both relevant here. In regards to Tanga:_________________________________________________________________________Here's the Valley Games stand on this issue:First. Tanga has done nothing wrong. I have been in contact with Tanga directly on this air in the measure hour. Tanga sourced the games from a legitimate supplier and undergo every right to change the bet. Tanga actively searched out the game to sell on their website as a "prestige item"; something to create some extra excitement. Tanga has reported that the bet was sold.

"Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage - Battles... Sigh..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:35:46

Man. I've played two games now and never ever won a battle. Ever. Today in one battle. I had 20 cards to my opponent's 14. I had NO reserves. Got spanked. The randomness of contend is too high in my opinion. One can communicate all they want about the subtlties of the system blah blah blah but that doesn't alter it any less frustrating or random. Also winning a battle may not be necessary to advance your goals. I learned that the hard way -- I used Hannibal to force a contend to get further south into Italy and just KNEW I could win the battle. After six rounds. I did win -- but the battle casualties hurt me more than the Romans. I wound up heading approve across the Alps to lick my wounds. Instead. I should have withdrawn from the battle and lived to fight another day. No battles won in two games that's unusual but it's hard to mention without knowing what happenend. Maybe you just had outrageous bad luck maybe you picked the wrong fights. Did you use forbid and withdraw? Were you playing Rome or Carthage? In most games Rome. I evaluate will lose more than half of the battles which is no big broach since it has the resources to cope with this. Specificaly about the contend you mentioned (20 battlecards against 14). I anticipate you played Rome (Carthage almost never manages to begin a battle with 20 BC's) and most likely you were fighting Hannibal. If that's the case (and concede me if I'm wrong here) you shouldn't be surprised you lost. There really is no guarantee of beating Hannibal change surface with a full hand of BC's especially if you had a mediocre or lousy consul. There is a cerebrate after all why the game is called 'Hannibal' and not 'Tiberius Longus' or 'Varro' The randomness of contend is too high in my opinion. One can talk all they want about the subtlties of the system blah blah blah but that doesn't make it any less frustrating or random. undergo not received my bet YET but if the randomness of contend was that high you should undergo won about half of them shouldn't you? Maybe your opponent fought exceed and the contend system is not that random... My guess is you are making the do by operational (when and where to engage in battle) and tactical choices (your actions in a given battle). Also if you're playing Rome you might expect to suffer a good deal of battles against Hannibal or in Hispania/Africa where the Carthaginians tend to also undergo an favor. The Romans can take a lot of punishment and often willingly accept a series of defeats in request to slowly attrit the enemy. What generals were facing each other in this battle? A good general fighting a poorer one can compensate for a considerable favor in contend cards enjoyed by your opponent. Without this information it's impossible to say whether you actually had an edge in that particular contend. As for not having any reserves well that ought to have been an affright signal. Did you consider withdrawing at the first opportunity? Armies often disengaged when they found the terrain or whatever not to their liking... One can communicate all they want about the subtlties of the system blah blah blah but that doesn't make it any less frustrating or random. Frustrating? That's of cover in the eye of the beholder. Random? There's a lot you can do operationally to verify you have an favor in those battles you choose to act in. And once engaged in contend there are plenty of choices to be made. Quite frankly you being a newbie pretty much guarantees you're missing many of the subtle decision-points in battles. I myself had nowhere come the appreciation of these points until I had years of experience with the bet. As I discovered ever more layers of decision-making in battles so did my appreciation of the contend separate mechanism ever increase. Man. I've played two games now and never ever won a battle. Ever. Today in one contend. I had 20 cards to my opponent's 14. I had NO reserves. Got spanked. When it comes to the so-called "subtleties" of the contend system the emperor has no clothes. I wish that those who give the battle-card system would be satisfied with giving us an "I desire it," and be done with it. Everything else after that only supports the claim of the naked emperor. Having said this history is replete with examples of the smaller compel "spanking" the larger force. Canne is not only the classic example from 2nd Punic War it is one of the classic examples from military history. At Canne leadership and planning meant more than numbers; 80 000 dead captured wounded and scattered Romans express the story. None of this makes losing measure and again less frustrating. But do not judge Hannibal by the weakness of the battle-card system. The game shines not because of the battle-card system but in spite of it. Are you seriously asking that we restrict discussion of games game mechanics or anything that has to do with games to 'like' or 'don't like'? Sure as so often in matters of comprehend first there is the liking or disliking and then we examine for arguments to justify our predilections (and not the other way around) but that does not mean that those arguments undergo no determine or are of no interest. Or is it just this particular subject i e the contend cards in Hannibal that we are not allowed to discuss in your presence? Are you seriously asking that we circumscribe discussion of games bet mechanics or anything that has to do with games to 'like' or 'don't desire'? Sure as so often in matters of taste first there is the liking or disliking and then we search for arguments to justify our predilections (and not the other way around) but that does not mean that those arguments have no value or are of no arouse. Or is it just this particular subject i e the contend cards in Hannibal that we are not allowed to address in your presence? I am always serious. Read all my threads. construe. Every. One. Never do I use sarcasm or hyperbole. Never do I be the truth to make a truism. Never do I use gratify. I am always serious. Always. But to get serious if only for a moment no. I do not evaluate nor because I like this freedom of speech that we cherish do I want to check discussion on the battle system of Hannibal. Nevertheless the more one tries to defend it the more indefensible it becomes. It is a accommodate built on sand wating for the gesticulate of logic to strike it down. communicate it up all you want it comfort falls down. That is why I prefer and simply consider the simple. "I desire it," without it being wrapped in sugar-coated pseudo-logic that cannot act the alter of hard thinking. If sugar-coated pseudo-logic arguments hold value and interest for you then rock on. Rock loud too. This way you ordain not hear any dissenting voices knocking at the door. With no sarcasm intended. I have exceed things to do with my time (such as continue bring home the bacon on the Hannibal review I am writing so that I can get to those English papers that need grading so that I can maybe just maybe set up and compete a move of my C&C Ancients this pass) then to try to dress the minds of those who desire the battle system. People who desire it ordain not change their minds because they desire it. Logic has nothing to do with it. If was not as if anyone did a logical analysis of the battle-card system compared it to CRT systems (for better or for worse) in other games looked at tactical systems in strategic games like Empires in Arms compared it with what we know of how the 2nd Punic war was fought and then came to the conclusion that the battle-card system is the beat thing God ever allowed into a wargame..

Will anyone make a new Hannibal gamebox/module based on the VG edition? I certainly hope so. I don't experience how to do it myself and undergo no idea if it's ok or not with VG to use their edition as a base. Does anyone experience? Paul,I can't answer your call from a VG edition based module but I can advise that a very good friend of mine is working on the current vassal module to make it more suitable to competitive play. I've only just started playing this bet since receiving my VG copy and believe on vassal for 'real-time' game play. Having familiarised myself with the current module it soon became apparent that you need a good deal of 'faith' in your opponent when trying to handle the card compete in the module. There's no clear way to keep a track of your opponent's transfer of cards and some of the Strategy Cards require a random displace that again is rather diffcult given the current module create by mental act. Some simple enhancements ordain allievate these little niggles and present a more than functional module that will give me many hours of happy gaming. I quite desire the look and conclude of the AH edition gameboard. Not as good as the VG edition I give you but still pleasing on the eye.

"Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage - Hannibal on Tanga? WTF?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 15:56:59

Valley Games has a lot of brace to sell Hannibal on Tanga before preorder customers undergo received their copies let alone at a lower price. Bye bye Valley Games. This has got to be the one of the stupidest public-relations stunts ever. I ordain carry them some money -- but quite a lot of hatred as come up. I just don't get it. Valley Games has a lot of nerve to sell Hannibal on Tanga before preorder customers undergo received their copies let alone at a displace price. Bye bye Valley Games. That seems pretty shady. I think they were selling the game at Essen weeks ago too. I'm shocked that the people who helped fund the project are being treated like this. Now until a Valley Games representative lets us know the whole story. I do agree the whole thing is kinda shady/crappy but Valley Games might undergo nothing to do with the decision to sell on Tanga. Could be a distributor or any number of other things just saying is all. I'm not defending it being sold just saying to wait for the story before any knee-jerk reaction. In all disclosure yes I already received my preorder so maybe I'd be just as upset if I hadn't yet but I doubt it. Yes this was VG taking a ritual dagger and slitting their own throats while laughing. Even if it was their plan not waiting at least 6 months was a vile thing to do. Not that I have any interest in the game but this is just such poor judgement that it borders on unethical. I don't accept that anyone could be so stupid that they haven't realized the be of damage this has done to their ability to capture future preorders. My guess is that this business isn't a lucrative as they thought that they finally realize all of the people shouting for reprints were a really tiny but exceptionally vocal crowd and they be out. I really can't accept this wasn't done without the intention to put themselves out of business. Whether or not Valley Games had any knowledge of this is moot. Tanga has it. I don't. And if you hadn't received you pre order you would be pissed to. It's not about the money. It's about investing in a product (thats what you do when you preorder) and getting a return on that investment (which is getting the bet BEFORE the command public). This whole thing has been handled poorly. Valley Games has a lot of promise and potential. But either they don't have the wisdom or the desire to make it bring home the bacon. I think at this point. Valley Games should furnish a reject to those who preordered this and have not received it do to whatever. Because they sure did everything the could to make sure retailers and disounters had it. While I did not pre-order this game. I did pre-order Container. Titan and Supernova. Only Container I am going through with only because they charged me before I could see the poor quality of the pre-order bonuses. I will just wait from now on. I understand the pre-order in the sense of getting the bet printed but at the same time I am not a big enough fan of the Titan for that to matter to me. I'm as frustrated as all of you but we should act to hear something. Isn't it at least possible that VG uses a distributor that has done something beyond the control of the company? I'm as frustrated as all of you but we should act to hear something. Isn't it at least possible that VG uses a distributor that has done something beyond the control of the company? And if that were true the prove is the same - why would anyone ever preorder again knowing the possibilty exists?Everyone will simply wait for that distributor to liquidate. And that means no more preorders. No more VG. Could be a distributor or any be of other things just saying is all. In this case. VG is still acting in bad faith. Why would a distributor have copies to sell before the preorders are filled? I have NEVER done this before but I just canceled my remaining preorders with them ($245.00 worth). I wished them the best of luck in their next business venture. I have NEVER done this before but I just canceled my remaining preorders with them ($245.00 worth). I wished them the best of luck in their next business venture. Talking with your wallet. A brave and noble act. Could be a distributor or any number of other things just saying is all. In this case. VG is still acting in bad faith. Why would a distributor have copies to sell before the preorders are filled? This is the main point. Does Tanga actually undergo the games to change? They are known to take quite some measure to ship some particular games. It is certainly possible that Tanga made an offer to a distributor and undergo sold it with a promise of receiving in lets say 10 days. I am getting to that inform. And what the hell its like they don't experience about this. Why oh why ordain they not go on here and say something. Anything. I would even take a 'hello' right now.
