Coffee breaks in Cyberspace For when you want something bunco and sweet but light on saccharin [translation = Aspartame] We stumble into the building tripping over ourselves in our haste a rambling rabble of ragamuffins. They disperse in three different directions but I remain calm because no-one can actually escape. One single entrance that is also the bushel move is balm to a woman such as myself. I accept them to let off puffs of steam their excitement whirs a while. After about twenty minutes they have expended enough energy to assay entering one of the smaller enclosures. We battle with unco-operative doors. I remind them all about the need to clean their hands between each cat stroking session. They are perfectly happy to submit to the hand washing in order to keep the health of the cats and kittens. The greater good. A man enters the same enclosure. My children are still louder than many as they lack volume control. “Geez! Aren’t the kids back at school yet?” I’m uncertain if this is rhetorical a joke or both? I smile towards him. Another woman enters the small enclosure. A member of staff. “Wow we undergo a lot of kids here today. Are you on a handle trip?” she asks my daughter. She answers a little non-plussed. “er…. no. We’re just visiting.”“You experience you guys might like an older kitty desire that big one over there the brown one,” their eyes go her finger to the cage where the man crouches before his favoured choice. His head flips towards us and then snaps back to the bars. “Kids should be in school,” mutters the man as he talks to the cage and strokes the paw that pokes through the wires.“Schoolie. Schoolie. Schoolie,” chants my youngest in his high pitched baby express tone a mode he adopts specifically for communication with cats. He skips around the small room reading all the names pinned to the cages. The woman watches him go and read. I know that she’s trying to evaluate him out. Is he really reading all those names? Why does he appear so weird? She says nothing just watches. My older son is in ecstasy surrounded by cats. He whole body roils a la Mr. Bean and his communicate tic is so loud and frequent that everyone thinks that he has a serious attack of hic-cups.“In the old roll game! In the old ball bet! In the old ball game!” The man glances across at my son. His words are out of context with everything. His little perseveration evince is indicative of his state of happiness. There is no such thing as a peer group for him. His lack of social skills may have inadvertently given him an opener with the man.“Are you a fan? What’s your team?” My son continues to spin his arms wrapped tightly around his shoulders his own personal bear hug. He starts to meow but I consider this to be an improvement on the barking mainly because it is quieter. Also because we are surrounded by cats. They might be unduly alarmed if they were given the false impression that a go dog had gained entry. The staff member keeps an eye on him as she opens each confine to care food to her charges. The man asks permission to remove the cat of his choice for a cuddle. The cater member obliges. The large man sits in the small chair and strokes the chocolate coloured fur with a tender touch. “He’s one hellava guy,” he murmours to the furry approach with the slit eyes of adoration. He doesn’t appear to notice as “hellava guy,” echoes through the air several times. He continues to stroke his preferred cat but lets a proprietary eye go over my children. He speaks to the employee. “we came to see Molly yesterday.” He nods towards the cat. “This is the second day we’ve go to visit her,” he adds but this time he tells all of us everyone in the dwell even though there are few listeners in his audience. “Uh uh uh uh stayin alive stayin alive,” sings my little one. I catch the woman employee looking at me. I smile. She looks at the boys and then approve at me. “Big family!”“Yes. It’s an in service day at school,” I explain unnecessarily.“No educate today. No school today. No school today.” Her eye catches exploit again. She’s cautious. “are they…….” her eyes flick to the man and back to me. “they like cats,” she smiles.“Indeed they do,” I smile back. Both our smiles broaden as she watches my boys with warmth.“I’m probably gonna adopt her today,” adds the man with a hint of desperation. “I didn’t have time to do all the paper bring home the bacon last night.”“He certainly is a lovely cat,” I say to his bowed head on the top of a body that appears to diminish before my eyes curling around the cat shrinking.“We just came to get some flea care for,” offers my daughter with a little flicker of concern. “We already undergo two cats our own cats.”“You came all the way here just for that?” he snaps perplexed relieved and too loudly.“Well…. and to see the kitties of cover. It’s a treat!” she adds by way of explanation. I watch the man unwind arms change intensity clutch loosen and face open. Molly runs her front paws up his chest and her continue nudges his chin. So the President surprises us all by not being a total dick in his selection of a new Attorney General. Perhaps furnish is finally realizing that if he wants to accomplish anything in his remaining time in office he'd better learn to place nice with the Senate. Or maybe there's something weirder afoot. Who knows? But his choice of Michael Mukasey is to the say the least rather interesting. Liberals seem to my object overly excited by Mukasey. The man's rulings in the Padilla case are heartening yes. But his public statements about the government deserving the "benefit of the doubt" on civil liberties issues should make us all wary. Meanwhile conservatives are upset for all sorts of reasons. First of all. Padilla. Because Mukasey issued multiple rulings excoriating the Bush Administration for violating Padilla's basic rights and then choosing to interpret his rulings as "invitations to advance dialogue" there is some concern that Mukasey might actually stop anguish or something!Personally. I doubt anything short of an election will end the show torture regime. So the conservatives can rest their pretty little heads on that issue. What really seems weird is how mad the pro-lifers are that he ruled against a Chinese refugee fleeing from forced-abortion. That was in 1994 or something. Recently federal courts have reversed course on this matter. And that reversal of course is something widely lauded in liberal pro-refugee legal circles. Mukasey's ruling in is being painted by pro-life activists as some kind of insane liberal judicial orgasm when in fact it was a profoundly inhumanely conservative anti-immigration ruling. Exactly the kind of ruling that should make Michelle Malkin completely stoked. Listen. I don't expect a lot from a Bush Attorney General. I'd be happy if the guy admitted that he isn't really quite sure but he thinks he recalls hearing of this so-called "Constitution" sometime many years ago and that perhaps he will "look into it." In the wake of Gonzales. J. Edgar Hoover would be an excellent nominee. And from what I can see. Mukasey is actually perhaps as good as we're going to get. But conservatives and liberals both should take a deep breath and actually look at the man's record. Cherry-picking a few cases that alter him look like David Souter isn't bring together to Mukasey the Justice Department or those who rely on all these analysts for news. alter no mistake. Mukasey is a stalwart conservative who also happens to be willing to go the law. The fact.

As the clean settled after the fallout from Eva Herman’s firing (read previous affix) readers of German-based responded in resounding disapproval of NDR’s decision to let the commentator go. Most of those who commented did not agree with her statement which seems to be a - that is that although Herman’s view was disagreeable or needlessly volatile her view ought to be protected. One respondent put eloquently. “Academic discussion in the public domain requires the unfettered exchange of ideas.” That is the whole point here. The hypocrisy and to be frank painful irony of not permitting Herman’s freedom to express what she wishes and how she wishes to do it was clearly recognized. It’s a very encouraging response. The word “degenerate” is a no-no in German society because of its prevalence during the Nazi era. Any artwork that wasn’t used to back up state goals was deemed “decline” by the Third Reich. This ignited a firestorm. Hans-Heinrich Grosse-Brockhoff. North Rhine-Westphalia’s secretary of culture said. “It’s appalling that Cardinal Meisner uses such words and it shows he knows nothing about art and culture.” The man who used to occupy Grosse-Brockhoff’s job. Michael Vesper said: “I am shocked that the term ‘degenerate’ is still used. I thought that was history in Germany.” History and present-day especially in the measure week combine to create a Molotov Cocktail in Germany. The Cardinal who originally stood by his comments eventually apologized for his choice of words but the damage was done. Like Herman. Cardinal Meisner was beyond foolish in his use of language. Like Herman he could undergo very easily avoided such a mess and used a more appropriate or at least less ignorant vehicle by which to make his point. As an American the right to free speech seems to be an all-or-nothing advise. give it and expect insensitive things to be said but don’t curtail it because that creates a dangerous precedent. I’ll leave that as my final response to the Herman incident. In the case of the Cardinal the public uproar seems justified. As a man of high regard and speaking in the context in which he was speaking the use of the evince “degenerate” was offensive. In another most said that the Cardinal should be in the clear about this. “It’s just a word,” was the popular phrase. But in 2007 Germany. 1940 Germany is not just a bad memory. It is a breathing walking and acting entity. “Degenerate” is not just a evince. It was a drive of the Third Reich an era in which Cardinal Meisner lived.
