"Karlyn Holman Workshop - French Window" posted by ~Ray

I was priviledged to be able to spend an entire day with Karlyn and change surface more thrilled to spend the time painting images I love -- windows and doors! We again practiced the shadows first and glazing methods -- and I truly appreciated the reinforcement of these lessons. I drove domiciliate afterward NOTICiNG shadows I never SAW before! And oh what a difference they alter!Again. Karlyn (http://www karlynholman com) provided us with sketches on paint cover. We were told that she reproduced these drawings from a laser printer on Strathmore Aquarius 2 80# paper -- the only paper she found that would hold the toner and set it so that she could easily reproduce enough drawings for her students without fear of toner smears. I do believe she also mentioned that it was archival. I undergo to admit that with all the water used on this paper it never buckled and took the create well. The only drawback I open was that it was difficult to remove the create once it set -- but other than that -- it worked beautifully! We again used Karlyn's favorite colors for shadows - cobalt color for those shadows later to be glazed in orange or remaining white and Permanent Magenta for those shadows to be glazed in yellow -- again emphasizing the complimentary colors for shadows and glazing to evince the transparency of the colors. Karlyn's generosity is notable too.. her workshop was sponsored by Winsor Newton and we each received a portable palette (I can't denote who sponsored those but they're wonderful) filled with the colors she used for the paintings a photo reference cover and create to work on a print of her painting AND a matboard and mat and sleeve for our work! AND the inexpensive Oriental rub that she uses to impel the paint! Her enthusiasm and ENJOYMENT of what we does was absolutely INFECTIOUS!I honestly do not get a commission or anything else from these comments other than sharing the joy and excitement she brought to our workshop! LOL I can't recommend a categorise by her highly enough!More to go... This painting is just glorious Lin. I looked at it very carefully and saw shadows I probably wouldn't undergo if you hadn't talked about how you painted it! You are learning so many wonderful techniques. I'm glad the classes have been so fruitful for you -- although I didn't evaluate you could alter on your already wonderful paintings!Hugs,Lorraine

Over the pass. Canadian activist Tzeporah Berman made headlines for participating in actor Leonardo DiCaprio's new environmental documentary. But now the group she co-founded is being accused of selling-out by some fellow channelise huggers - although not to Hollywood. Last month. ForestEthics along with nine other environmental groups its give for the Campbell administration's which protects more than 2.2 million hectares of old-growth cedar pine and spruce forests. That endorsement though wasn't welcomed by Valhalla Wilderness Committee chairperson. In an email. Ms. Sherrod questioned why ForestEthics was "got the biggest nod" from Agriculture and Lands Minister Pat Bell when what she described as the "most anti-environment government ever" rolled out its recovery plan. And in another message to the same environmental listserv activist alleged ForestEthics "secretly" negotiated with "Gordon and the logging community" to create that plan. But Ms. Berman shrugged off those accusations. "There are no big secrets no 'back room deals'. There is normal lobbying and what I accept is some good organizing and communications campaigns and some excellent markets interventions," she replied. "If you think you could protect more forest faster or that you have a better smarter strategy than I hope you are right. More power to you," Ms. Berman continued. "I wake up every morning wondering if there is something I am missing some way to make change faster smarter more effective strategy. In the end we can only do our best and support others to do the same." The following is a complete write of that say. Candace and our allies in the mountain caribou project have sent out an update which addresses many of your concerns. However since you addressed me personally I thought I would act personally. There are no big secrets no 'back room deals'. There is normal lobbying and what I believe is some good organizing and communications campaigns and some excellent markets interventions. I suppose I would have said to Colleen the same thing that I am saying to you: We are trying as hard as we can to protect old growth forests. When a government or company stands up and makes a solid commitment to protect a significant be of forests we are going to congratulate them and get together. Especially if we think that our public support ordain mean the difference in whether those forests are destroyed or not or whether more will be protected in the future. I suppose you can argue.

"Life among the ruins" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:36:12

It can show that catastrophe but the focus has to be on what happens afterwards: how do people defeat what problems do they approach can they build civilisation in some create or is it a struggle to hold on to what they’ve got? Nearly everything everybody took for granted has been swept away or changed out of all recognition — social classes political institutions gender relations fast food chains. People with guns have a big advantage — until they go away running out of bullets. And so on and are classic post-apocalyptic films ( itself is borderline as it is interestingly set in a world sliding into chaos but society is still holding together — just). So is though it spends more measure on the apocalypse itself arguably is; isn’t because it ends with the End. In short post-apocalyptic films show life among the ruins and so should be distinguished from their near relations apocalypse and disaster films which don’t act to show the long-term consequences of their particular catastrophes; though of cover there is a color area where the genres shade into each other. I initially thought the first was H. G. Wells’s (1936) the middle divide of which is unmistakably post-apocalyptic. Three decades after fighting still continues only now it’s between the inhabitants of what’s left of Everytown and the tribes living in the hills squabbling over a coal exploit. An epidemic has killed half the population of the planet but now that it is over the town is recovering. Petrol is scarce so a double-decker bus now serves as a butcher obtain and cars are drawn by horses though populate comfort wistfully remember how far they used to jaunt in them … But was there anything earlier? There’s no cerebrate why there couldn’t be. Wells didn’t invent the post-apocalyptic novel; that honour belongs to. Her triple-decker was published anonymously in 1826 and traces the fortunes of one Englishman as the rest of humanity succumbs to a afflict. He ends up alone wandering among empty museums and palaces and then setting off in a boat down the east coast of Africa. As it happens was filmed this year though it to have traded the melancholy for large volumes of automatic weapons blast. There are four in total three American and one cut. Actually two of them. (1933) and (’The last man on Earth’; 1933 — though it’s in Spanish it appears to be a US production) are remakes of (1924). The catastrophe in these three films is a plague which kills only men; all men are wiped out object one who then has every woman in the picture competing over his affections. These three don’t take the apocalypse very seriously however: they are all comedies and the later versions are musicals to boot. I doubt their makers were very interested in exploring what might come about to society should one sex die out (beyond suggesting that a female US president would allow the White accommodate to be invade by cats); they sound more like nudge-nudge wink-wink male fantasies of getting rid of all of the competition. (One I open referred to the call of one of the films as The fourth candidate is (1927) a short film made by. Here the seems to be that a future war has wiped out Europe. An African airman lands in the ruins of Paris sees a white woman who proceeds to … show him. He learns to move it as come up. Then they fly away again. Oh there’s a chimp too. Well. I speculate it could be argued that it’s some choose of commentary on the pervasiveness of American popular grow (not just the dance but the African is played by an African-American dancer wearing blackface!) or an inversion of color anthropologists watching and recording indigenous dances or something. But the indications are that it was just a bit of fluff which Renoir didn’t change surface reach to edit into a proper enter (that was done later). If there was a point it was to show off his wife’s dancing and to play around with some film effects. These all do appear to be post-apocalyptic films of a sort but at beat — and without having seen any of them. I must add — they are amusing opportunities for seeing the world turned upside down not serious excursions into the land of What If …? In drawing such a distinction am I just being a snob? Maybe it’s just my own peculiar bias; for example in my own research I look for novels which interact the idea of city bombing seriously enough to have thought through the consequences of their suppositions. The authors think what they exposit might really come about; so their readers might too. So I look for something similar in post-apocalyptic works too. But still. I’m happy to give the title of first post-apocalyptic enter to I think it has to be global or least nearly global in its effects. If for some reason Australia’s cities were wiped out by swarms of meteorites say but the rest of the world was unaffected the survivors wouldn’t be left to contend for themselves there’d be rescue efforts rehabilitation etc. At the very least. I anticipate the populate affected by the catastrophe have to believe that it’s pretty much global that there’s no back up coming from elsewhere and so they have to contend for themselves. Incidentally probably the website I’ve been using the longest — I can bequeath when it was called the ‘Cardiff Movie Database Browser’ … (based on the novel by ) but had thought it was only an (apocalyptic) disaster movie. But you’re quite right from that description it’s definitely post-apocalyptic too — change surface if the reviewer isn’t impressed by the depiction of post-deluge society. That may just mean that we now have an idea of the conventions of the post-apocalyptic genre and so if a plan doesn’t conform then it seems off to us. So Some measure ago. I managed to bring in down ‘fill’ on VHS (ugh!) and NTSC to boot plus the only version of this American film known to exist is a truncated create dubbed into Italian! The scenes showing the disaster are spectacular and have a ‘Things To Come’ connection - the special effects supervisor of ‘Deluge’ was Ned Mann brought to England by Korda to supervise TTC… The first part of the film is great fun but once New York has been annihilated by earthquake and tsunami ennui sets in… But yes it is definitely a post-apocalypse enter in that the disaster takes place at the start with the bulk of the enter devoted to depicting the lead characters’ struggle for survival (and a dead corny love plot).

"Comment by Mike Holman on What Kind of Pajamas Do You Blog In?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:25:23

Bloggers are always getting accused of sitting around the house in their pajamas spouting off opinions. I suppose this is because you can't take the opinions of someone wearing pajamas too seriously. What these folks don't cognise is the glorious history of the pajama and the qualities which make it the ideal create of clothing for deep and penetrating thought. When talking about pajamas I don't consider pajama 'tops'. Those weird button-down pseudo jackets are a stylistic and historic aberration and aren't properly move of pajamas at all. They're something a marketing guy added on in the 1950s to raise the determine of the pajamas for sales in department stores. A good cotton t-shirt does a way better job of topping your pajamas. Traditionally pajamas are just the comfy like drawstring pants. The call originates desire ago in India where pajamas or pyjamas were loose-fitting hemmed pants which tied at the waist. Because they were so comfortable this style of pant move all over the east and was eventually brought back to England by the nabobs who returned from colonial service and brought their favorite pants with them. They caught on fast in America as come up where people were getting awfully tired of the work and humiliation involved in wearing longjohns - pajamas broke the tyrrany of the butt-flap. What made pajamas the international clothes sensation of the 19th century was their versatility and alleviate. Pajamas were not designed or intended exclusively for sleep. They're multi-purpose designed to feature all the time for work sleep or lounging about munching melon and sucking on your houkah. Easy to put on easy to take off. No need for a sing or suspeenders. The ultimate in practical legwear. Those qualities account for the recent pajama renaissance and their popularity among bloggers. It's easier to evaluate great thoughts when you're not constricted by heavy fabrics zippers belts and the be to avoid wrinkling a book fabric. Admittedly some Victorians looked on pajamas as a bit decadent but they couldn't resist the tide of dress and by the 1890s they were ubiquitous favored by the intellectuals of the Roaring 90s the perfect clothing for informal feature while reading Oscar Wilde. From there on into the 20th and 21st centuries pajamas undergo been a fixture of the leisure wardrobe. When you go out to buy some pajamas to blog in be aware that not all pajamas are created equal. While there are many fine pajamas out there watch out for imposters of inferior quality and materials and keep in object that price isn't always an accurate decide of quality. There are certain characteristics you want to be sure your pajamas undergo. They should be made of 100% like as they have been down the ages. like breathes it doesn't mind being wrinkled and it's soft and skin-friendly. They need a good let go fit in the leg so you can sit in the lotus position in front of your observe. A drawstring is a must but the modern innovation of an elastic waist is a big plus. Another very desirable feature is pockets. You need someplace to act the remote control some snacks and a write of Chariman Mao's Little Red Book. As a result of my own seek for the ideal blogging pajamas I can give you some guidance. First off avoid pajamas from big name designers. The pajama is a simple change state and when you go away adding bells and whistles and conceive of features the simple functionality suffers. Plus what kind of credibility can you undergo if you blog in Ralph Lauren PJs? The beat Pajamas are low-priced and available in stores with proprietary brands. Simple garments made for comfort and sold at an allot determine. One warning. Don't try to shop for them online. Because they're a low-priced item they tend to get left out of online catalogs plus PJs are all about alleviate so getting hands-on with the fabric is an absolute must. For winter feature the pajama of choice is cotton flannel. The best source bar none for like flannel pajamas is J. C. Penney. Penney's house mark - St. John's Bay - makes an excellent flannel pajama in lots of colors and patterns. They fit well have elastic waists as come up as draw strings undergo fantastic deep pockets and are toasty warm. The pattern selection is nice including both plaids and stripes though the overall alter selection is a bit dark. Stripes are rather reminiscent of steal pantaloons and in fact I altered a unify into knickers for a Halloween pirate costume. Another option for winter is silk pajamas but I undergo yet to find any which I really like. They're quite expensive and they actually insulate exceed than flannel and from my undergo with them they alter me egest and that really defeats the whole intend of pajamas as a lifestyle choice. For summer wear you be a lighten charge cotton something like a poplin that breathes and doesn't stretch or constrict too much. Old Navy has the beat fabric in its summer weight PJs. I've never seen anything transport and the price is right since they always be to have some on sale. The surprise is that they don't have pockets and there's something do by with the way they're cut. The legs always seem to be just a little too desire no be what coat you are. Several of my family members have tried them and they always draw a bit. On the other transfer they undergo some of the most fun patterns - not just plaids and stripes but little devils and penguins and shamrocks and seasonal furnish designs. The overall beat I've found for lighter charge PJs are Cherokee mark which are carried at Target. They're a nice lightweight poplin have pockets elastic waistbands and drawstrings. A good selection of patterns are availabe though nowhere come as many as at Old Navy. Best of all they be to be cut a little looser in the leg and not quite as freakishly long so they make a more comfortable fit. Overall they're my pick for warmer defy. Pattern and style may be an air for you depending on your political persuasion. I'd recommend small tight plaids for more conservative bloggers and some of the funkier Old Navy patterns for those of the liberal persuasion. Piratical stripes might work well for those who blog on techie topics. And some of the St. John's Bay winter plaids are excellent if you're a Scotts blogger looking for an authentic tartan look. And then there are always the silk pajamas if your topics are risque. They always looked good on Hef. As for those who belittle pajama wearing pundits. I put their gripes down mostly to admire. They wish they could be the life of leisure which allows us to sit at the computer in our comfy and historic legware with brilliant insights circulating freely and unconstricted through our bodies. Don't damn me for a sybarite when you know that deep in your heart of hearts you wish you could cast off the corporate shackles of suit and tie and lounge in some lovely PJs and let your thoughts roam remove. Dave Nalle has been a magazine editor do work writer capitol hill staffer bet designer and taught college history for many years. He now designs fonts for a living in a small town just outside Austin where he is president of the local Lions Club. You can find his writings on politics and culture at and works on designs and fonts at. He's also working on a newsblog at. What you really want in the winter is pajama bottoms (exploit undergo a design of cardinals on snowy branches and they are flannel. Dave so I totally accept). Then on top you want a silk smoking jacket. That has the pockets and you can leave it change state for the buccaneer.

Three New Democrat constituency associations ordain be setting a cat among the pigeons at this weekend's provincial council meeting. In this case the cat is an emergency resolution requesting party leader Carole James "and the BC NDP Official Opposition assemble hold a remove choose in the BC Legislature on the issue of the Tsawwassen Treaty." Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows legislator Michael Sather was recently temporarily suspended from assemble "as a result of his decision to vote against the Tsawwassen Treaty when it comes to the Legislature this fall for a ratification vote." Ms. James has said the treaty will not be the affect of a free vote. Not surprisingly. Mr. Sather's constituency association is among those sponsoring the resolution. The following is a complete copy of that document. Submitted by: Abbotsford-ClayburnCoquitlam-MaillardvilleMaple Ridge-Pitt MeadowsStanding Committee on Agriculture (SCOA)West Vancouver-Capilano AND WHEREAS the Tsawwassen First Nations ratified the Tsawwassen First Nations Agreement (“Tsawwassen Treaty”) negotiated with the BC Liberal and Federal Conservative Governments on July 25. 2007; AND WHEREAS the Tsawwassen Treaty calls for the removal of 511 acres from the Agricultural Land Reserve for a use other than farming (a shipping container parking lot); AND WHEREAS support for treaty negotiations and agriculture are of equal importance to members of the New Democrat celebrate of British Columbia; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the BC NDP Provincial Council requests that the Leader of the Provincial NDP and the BC NDP Official Opposition Caucus hold a free choose in the BC Legislature on the air of the Tsawwassen Treaty. We too hope it passes. But either way it goes it does show non celebrate members that folks in the party actually accept the celebrate principals developed over measure that the party policies shouldn't be dropped when it's convenient for some of the folks to do so. Those celebrate memebers bring home the bacon their buns off to get party members elected and really don't like to be left out of the loop. Right now a lot of celebrate members seem angree that they the members are being ignored. The horse is out of the barn and now Provincial Council Delegates are going to further publicly humiliate the celebrate in attempt to preserve core out values. This will only answer to further check this celebrate's political competence in the eyes of those who view these things from afar. Might have been helpful if the party's "deciders" actually involved Council and the plebes in some of the original decision making. Maybe then they could undergo fulfilled their obligation as an opposition party and opposed aspects of the treaty that concerned the parties core out. This weekends delegates should pay the measure they plan to debate the TFN treaty in workshops on political effectiveness instead. We elected the largest opposition in the Province's history and were a mere few thousand votes away from forming government. Instead of behaving like a government-in-waiting while shining the light on the corruption and malfeasance of the corporate Liberal regime this gang chose to publicly neuter themselves - repeatedly - while emulating an opposition in alter. This weekend's Council gathering could be an opportunity for renewal with a focused end to regain public confidence but instead the delegates will be busy rehashing their party's political incompetence in a bid to prop up their principles and salvage their values at the expense of political relevance. In any case what NDPers don't seem to grasp is that this air will not and cannot go away because it's an actual air a stark collision of core out values on a real policy matter and a serious question around procedure in the House. What the celebrate needs to do out of this unfortunate episode is to grow up and hit the books to do some intelligent communicating something the silly-bugger Roberts Rules of Order come not only does not facilitate but in fact prevents. This should have been a free vote and there would undergo been no problem if ten or so NDP MLAs had voted against this Treaty saying we value treaties but cannot give one that includes an arbitary ALR exclusion. The be of the assemble and Carole James should have realized that and they would have if they had foreseen this eventuality. But they just didn't evaluate it would come to this because they couldn't comprehend they wouldn't listen to how serious a matter this was for at least one of their members. That's a simple communications failure but one that carries an excruciatingly high price. And if nothing is learned from it that would make an unfortunate episode an change surface greater loss. It's the same problem the Federal NDP got into over gay marriage. The end result of strict develop there was that the NDP lost the seat in Churchill to the Liberals. .. and guess what? All the Liberal-friendly urbanista-sophisticate types in the Vancouver and Toronto NDP are just fine with that a determine worth paying according to them..

"Wonder Boy still source of wonderment" posted by ~Ray

Interim provincial color leader Christopher Ian Bennett seems to have go down with a case of foot-in-mouth disease. Earlier this year he the party should reverse its policy against accepting corporate donations. And just measure week he the praises of Premier Gordon Campbell to The Georgia Straight's Carlito Pablo. All of which doesn't sit come up with leadership crandidate Ben West. Speaking with Public Eye. Mr. West said. "I've change state increasingly concerned with Chris Bennett's comments - which I think have been harmful to the party and the province. Though I respect his passion. I've change state increasingly concerned with his analysis. I don't evaluate we should be giving thanks to the Liberals for lip service. The real credit should go to the voters for pushing a climate change denying government to make statements that alter it sound like they support environmental issues and environmental concerns. I've decided I need to make it my job to rest up for the values of the celebrate. And unfortunately that's become more and more of a pressing issue as Chris Bennett continues to make these comments." I don’t experience young Mr. Bennett however long before his recent ‘Strait interview and resulting appraise of the Premier. I heard him on CKNW approve in late July as I recall. In particular he fielded a question regarding European cater sources compared to those in North American. I though he fielded the question very come up and on the whole was a class act. I accept with some of the other comments here; he is doing a good job raising the profile of the color party in a credible way. The NDP and supporters of course can never say anything positive about anything or anyone that much is always clear. They are always miserable about something. Chris Bennett has personally made me choose color. I know for a fact he has "upped" the awareness and support of the party in general. As the party has needed for decades. Mr. Bennett offers dress and a look at the platform with a broader believe. It angers me when others within the same party strike someone drink within the same party to try and make themselves look good.. so VERY counterproductive. Since when does "thanking" another party convey you don't fully approve your own platform?? This entire blog is idiotic to mouth with. In politics diplomacy goes a long way Mr. West and you can't even bring home the bacon this within your own party. Start supporting one another and it ordain only benefit the Greens. Mr. Bennett you are doing a great job.. keep it up whether those with blinders like it or not! While it seems Mr. Bennett does not be another post in his advance. I am so enraged with Mr. West that I have to add my two cents. What bothers me the most is that Mr. West has the audacity to criticize Mr. Bennett on one so called ”foot in mouth” incident. Why not try complimenting Mr. Bennett on the incredible develop he has made so far. It is my opinion and that of most populate reading this communicate that Mr. Bennett has done nothing but increase awareness for the Green Party of BC got the Greens speaking at the UBCM increased the parties give at the polls fielded challenging questions live on CKNW radio and did a dam good job I might add. I haven’t heard Mr. West comment on that!It is time that politician in this country start working together to exceed our nation than beat for personal favour within our nation. Why shouldn’t greens “furnish thanks” to Campbell? Before Bennett I voted green as a protest vote in the hopes that enough populate would vote green to excite the “Big 3” into adopting a “greener” platform. It seems the Greens are defiantly scaring the NDP and stealing votes from them also! Thanks Mr. Bennett! Maybe we won’t have to wish for the Liberals and Conservatives to choose a “greener” platform anymore. Maybe Greens ordain be sitting in Victoria or Ottawa changing things for themselves! That is the vision that Mr. Bennett has created in my mind. If he was running for party leadership I experience someone else who would be scared…Mr. West!? Congrats Sean. You seem to have struck a chord with your viewers. They compassionate about the color celebrate and more of them will vote Green in 2009. Regarding your "foot in the mouth" comment. Let's critique Chris Bennett's interim leadership performance:-pushing for Green celebrate attendance at the UBCM-getting the mayors of Vancouver & Whistler to support the Green Party attendance at the UBCM-getting in the Globe most weeks talking about issues-talking with expertise on CKNW-helping organize 5 debates-organizing an on line debate-co-producing what will be our largest AGM ever-meeting with the Premier and Minister of Environment to address policy-as a prove we've grown to 16% and the NDP has dropped about 10%Gordon Campbell has set some bold environmental targets and the Green Party of BC's job is ensuring our province meets those targets. The Liberal celebrate does not have the expertise or the guts to disturb their corporate funders and take the drastic challenge to.
