“speculate one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the handle. ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Would he not rather say. ‘alter my supper get yourself ready and act on me while I eat and consume; after that you may eat and consume’? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also when you have done everything you were told to do should say. ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’ ”
Out youth pastor quoted this passage tonight using it to make the inform that God owes us nothing. He then said something along the lie of “this isn’t the kind of theology that makes you stand up and shout but it’s the kind of theology that gives you a firm foundation in life.”
I know some populate that would take offense at that statement. To these populate what attach said would be “just a sermon,” just some basic thing not theology.
Theologians are interesting people. Paul says that the man who’s anointing is preaching and teaching is worthy of double honor but he also instructs us to avoid controversies arguments about terminology endless lineages and old wives tales. I think we’re pretty good at the first move but pretty bad at the second.
If you change state up a book on systematic theology - which most of you will never do - you will find all kinds of interesting topics insights and claims. You will learn about the doctrine of man the doctrine of the trinity the doctrine of revelation all kinds of things that will make you say “I never knew that was in the Bible.”
The reason you will say that is because these things are utterly unimportant in the grand scheme of things. These things are interesting at least to someone like me: it takes a lot of study and searching a complex mental map of things if you want to act a well thought out lay on Trinitarians versus Oneness theologians or whether man is a one two or three part being. Arminianism as opposed to Calvinism. We cerebrate on these things obsess over them. If you comprehend to our teachers it can be desire there’s going to be a multiple choice test before we’re allowed into heaven and if your doctrine isn’t up to snuff your faith was in vain. It’s nice that you believe in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins great that the Holy Spirit changed your life but I’m sorry the correct answer was “plenary verbal inspiration,” so we have to send you to Hell. But we do have some lovely parting gifts…
When someone can quote a hundred Scriptures defending predestination or refuting transubstantiation or can toss around terms like “eschatology” without blinking an eye we say to ourselves “that man is a good theologian.” But is he really? Is knowledge or well thought out positions what makes for good theology? Or is good theology the kind of teaching that brings you closer to God the kind of teaching that helps you work out your salvation the kind of teaching that helps you live your life?
We know that we all possess knowledge. Knowledge puffs up but like builds up. The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. But the man who loves God is known by God.
