Sound Off: What?s Your Favorite Christmas Song?

Apparently we’re in full-on holiday mode here at GGL. So today’s sound-off is appropriately festive: What’s your favorite Christmas song? I say song not carol because I don’t want to limit responses in any way. In fact just to be ornery (and because my brain is fried). I’m going to start the bidding with an off-the-wall choice. One of my family’s favorite Christmas movies is called Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. It was made before I was born. We watch it every year. It’s old-school Sesame Street without all those fancy graphics and definitely pre-Elmo. It’s basically about Big Bird trying to figure out how Santa can get down the chimneys on Christmas Eve. Oscar tells him that if he can’t figure out how he does it. Santa won’t be able to do it which is really terrible logic but whatever. So in between seeing Big Bird trying to find answers to the big questions you get to see him singing Feliz Navidad on ice skates as well as watch Kermit the Frog interviewing kids to find out how it works. Mr. Hooper (RIP Mr. Hooper) facilitating an O. Henry exchange between Ernie and Bert and Cookie Monster eating every tool with which he tries to contact Santa. It’s really quite something. But (I’m getting to the point here) there’s one song that they sing that I just love. It’s called "True Blue Miracle," and for some reason it’s been in my head all season. Here are the first few lines:I believe in miracles and I can tell you whyOnce a year the street I live on sparkles like the sky* All hung with lights for ChristmasTwinkling everywhereThe world turns bright for Christmas And if that isn't a true blue miracleI don't know what one is(*If you saw the street I live on you’d understand why this is such a big deal.)I found it on YouTube but it's the most ghetto YouTube video ever so be patient. By the way the fact that I live in New York is in no small part because of Sesame Street. Check out those subway shots! I know it’s not about Jesus or anything but I don’t know. It sticks with me. It’s about hope and hope that is evident in the little things in particular and that’s kind of inspiring these days. So what’s YOUR favorite Christmas song? I LOVE Christmas Eve on Sesame Street!!! We too watch it every year. My favourite bits are the ones with Cookie Monster eating the pencil the typewriter and the telephone and Grover role-playing Santa with Billy. Classic. I have tons of favourite Christmas songs.. it's almost not fair to choose just one.. but I've been in love with "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" for several years. Such gorgeous lyrics - also about hope - and a lovely lilting melody. Great post. I haven't seen Sesame Street in SO long! The only song I remember from it is that "Sing. Sing a Song" song with the sign language lady."It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" is my favorite too. It just paints a picture in my mind of a deep starry peaceful quiet night."Silent Night" is my entire family's favorite. It's nice but I always squeak when I try to sing that high note. "Midnight Clear" is more fun because it has the low note and I can laugh at all the people who can't hit it. Is that mean? White Christmas is one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite movies. It was on TV the other day and they took out sooo much it was ridiculous! Never watch it on TV - watch the real full-length version. Because really - who doesn't love a white Christmas? Sbaar. I know you're baiting me here but I'm going to fall for it. I um could do without a white Christmas. I mean it's not like I've ever had a white Christmas or anything but.. oh man I hate snow. The song however. I do like. Wow! I haven't see Christmas Eve on Sesame Street in a loooong time. It's bringing back wonderful childhood memories as I watch the YouTube video. Ahh... Anyway. I have two favorites. My favorite "churchy" Christmas song is "O Holy Night." The Christmas Eve service at my church includes this song every year. My other favorite is "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey. It's not officially Christmastime until you've heard that one. I am on the same page with Erin... I love O Holy Night. it's so beautiful. That's my official favorite Christmas song. I also really enjoy "All I Want for Christmas is You"! What a fun song. Anne you brought it to my attention (not that I hadn't heard it before obviously but being aware of what a great song it is) with your post on it awhile back. Favorite Christmas song is Father Christmas from the Kinks. Favorite classic song that still stands up pretty well today is the Chipmunk song. Song I hate the most. "Mr. Grinch" The poor Grinch can't catch a break in this song. Just verse after verse after verse after verse of how awful he is. The Grinch repented in the end cut him some friggin' slack! I have a few.. too many to name just one... All I Want for Christmas is You (Mariah Carey). Santa Baby (Eartha Kitt). Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (Brenda Lee). Please Come Home for Christmas (The Eagles). Last Christmas (Wham)my all time fav is O Holy Night - I really like Jewel's version. I have quite a few favorite Christmas songs. I love "Sleigh Ride" by Debbie Gibson. "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey. "God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen" by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan and "Light of the World" by Point of Grace and Michael Tait. I love Christmas music! I saw this post and panicked. HOW CAN I CHOOSE JUST ONE?! It's not possible. But then I breathed into a bag listened to the three separate Christmas mixes I made (by genre of course!) and boldly narrowed it down to two. Religious:"I Heard the Bells" sung by Pedro the Lion. Non-Religious:"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." This song is SO mournful and sad and full of longing and hope and vulnerability. Every time I hear it. I think about all the dark years I've had and how Christmas still shines through somehow. It's awesome. So basically. I like depressing Christmas songs. Well until May posted I thought I was going to be original. My favorite is also "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" for the same reason. My husband pointed out the other day. "Why do so many Christmas songs sound sad?" I don't really know the answer. But it feels right somehow. Current favourite at our place is "Joy to the World". We are trying to perfect singing it in rounds but one of us always ends up losing the plot about half way through!All I Want for Christmas Is You is great. Also up there is the one about Snoopty and the Red Baron. Uh just by way of explanation that all caps entry was posted by my brother who (I'm guessing) must have just turned in his last paper of his first semester of law school and has apparently lost his mind along with all his motor skills. He's quoting another song from the Sesame Street Christmas movie. Except he didn't do it in sign language so he's not really that cool. So many to choose from!"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is lovely-especially when you're watching Judy sing it in Meet Me In St Louis (BTW-who KNEW I'd end up living in the St Louis area?)Erin O'Donnell's "Christmas Kiss" is very cute. O Come O Come Emmanuel is my fave hymn one. But tonight.. it's "Let it Snow. Let it Snow. Let it Snow"! 8" by morning!!

Ken and Polly came down to the South Island at the end of their trip,we made reservations to take the overnight cruise on Doutful Sound. Now. Doubtful sound really isn't a sound.. it's a fiord.. go to our encyclopedias for the difference.. a little home bring home the bacon never hurts. Named by Capt. James Cook,who when discovering it around 1765 saw the severe prevailing westerly winds and figured it was doubtful he could sail out without waiting several months. appear choice as it is beautiful,haunting but narrow. We drove to Te Anau avery stunning lake,met our friends and stayed at a great dwell(use wotif com to sight great last minute deals. our dwell usually NZ $375 for $125 for example). Next morning drove 20 k to Lake Manapouri to come in first boat that crosses that lake. Upon landing you board a bus for a trip over the mountains for about 45 min to reach the follow of Doutful Sound. At this point one boards the overnight ship for the cruise. Cabins great food terrific crew helpful... sail into the sound for activities like going out in a small boat,swimming.. nobody elected to try that in the deep freezing waters of the sound. Or.. kayaking.. which Candy and I chose. She was a natural... I was uncomfortable in a flimsy bit of plastic... then the head moved the boat about a mile or more away... I got fed up.. tired out and while submitting to boarding a motorcraft... capsized my kayak. Lifejackets do bring home the bacon and are advised....;swimming fully dressed is no fun.. and it wasn' as cold as expected,maybe terror kept me warm... bring through done in sight of all. Looked and felt like a dope... Ship captain took us out to the appeal to the Tasman Sea.. weather this trip great.. saw a pair of very rare crested penguins. Weather calm and reflective next morning.
